World Cup keeper has an absolute howler as Chelsea star Hakim Ziyech gifted goal vs Canada

Chelsea star Hakim Ziyech was gifted a goal against Canada at the World Cup.

Australia fans react to reaching World Cup last 16

Canada goalkeeper Milan Borjan gifted star Hakim Ziyech a goal at the with a bizarre error in his side's game against Morocco. Ziyech gave Morocco the lead with a long-range lob after Borjan inexplicably passed the ball straight to the player.

Morocco need to beat Canada to have any chance of progressing to the last 16. It would be quite a feat for the African nation given that they are in a group with Belgium and Croatia.

And Ziyech was handed an early present by Borjan in just the fourth minute. Canada attempted to slowly build possession around their defence before the ball was passed back to the shot-stopper.

Under pressure from a pressing striker, Borjan attempted to dummy a pass and dribble around the attacker. But the 35-year-old then seemed to get caught in two minds.

It was not entirely clear whether Borjan was trying to pass the ball to a team-mate or trying to dribble further. Regardless, his touch was poor and the ball fell straight into the path of Ziyech.

The Blues star did not even need to take a touch before lifting the ball into an empty net from around 35 yards. Morocco's players celebrated wildly with their substitutes, knowing three points would likely take them through to the knockout rounds.

Things got worse for Borjan as he let in a second Morocco goal 20 minutes later. Youssef En-Nesyri bore down on goal and fired low into the near corner. Borjan allowed the ball to go through his grasp and will certainly feel he should have kept out the effort.

Morocco need a win to take them onto seven points in the group. They could go through as group winners.

For Ziyech, this was the second time in just a few weeks that the former Ajax ace has scored from long range. He scored an outrageous goal from the halfway line as Morocco defeated Georgia 3-0 in a pre-World Cup friendly in November.

The 29-year-old is back in his national team after briefly retiring from international duty. Ziyech refused to work under former boss Valid Halilhodzic but vowed to return when the Bosnian was sacked earlier this year.

Now back in the frame, Ziyech has played a key role for Morocco at the World Cup. He will hope that some strong performances in Qatar will boost his profile at club level, with Chelsea apparently willing to listen to offers from interested parties.

Ziyech has struggled for game time under Graham Potter and former Blues boss Thomas Tuchel. A return to Ajax has been rumoured.
