We arrived here via the bullet train from Osaka and the station is very lively and in a great location within walking distance of Hard Rock Cafe and a Zen Temple. Lots of shops and stores in the station complex which is quite large. Grab a bento or sushi box and beer to take on the train!

We were staying at the Lively Hotel near Nakasukawabata Subway Station but it seemed we were in Hakata nearly every day for shopping or eating and for 2 days, we made day trips to Nagasaki and Hiroshima. I actually really liked Hakata Station. It was always busy but not crazy madness like the Nagoya Station.

Also, if you want to eat, there are plenty of good restaurants. We especially liked Shin Shin Ramen. Taiho Ramen also has a location there but we didn't get to try it.

In addition, if you like to shop, there are various 100 yen stores (Daiso, Can Do and Seria) all a few steps from Hakata Station

While in Fukuoka, we purchased the 2 Day unlimited Subway Pass for 740 yen per person and also the JR Sanyo Sanin Northern Kyushu 7 Day Pass for USD 200 for our day trips outside of Fukuoka.

I would use the word, the heart of Kyushu Train transportation, as most train must go and come here, no matter where you decide to go, either to Kagoshima, Beppu, Nagasaki, Mojiko, Osaka ... just name it, is all origin from here...

So if you plan to move around Kyushu, to stay near by the Hakata Station is definitely a PLUS +++ compare to Tenjin.

Just do some math, even though Tenjin to Hakata is just 3 stops , but the minimum fare single journey is 210 yen, so if you multiply by the days needed to travel, it come to a sum of few thousand, and for family of 4 like mine, it just worth to get one to stay near Hakata Station.

I didn't enjoy it at all. The station is much too small for the number of travellers it has to deal with despite international travel only just reopened. The subsidies to local travellers means that weekends the station is overfull. Ständig in line for validation of the JR pass took well over one hour. I spent three days for various reasons at the station and coin lockers had no vacancies unless you wanted one for a lady's handbag. Be prepared to drag your suitcase for your entire stay in or around the Station. Kyushu in general it is difficult to find a hotel vacancy at the weekend. It might have something to do with my time of travel, mid To end of November.

JR Hakata City (I prefer to call it a city than a station) is really big. It serves as a station for their subway, JR and Shinkansen. Spanning many floor including spider-webbed basements, it has department stores such as KITTE, Uniqlo, Hankyu, AMU Plaza and AMU EST and many more restaurants, cafes and eateries that we could not finish exploring even up to the last day. I bet one could stay here for a full one week and may not finish trying out at all the eateries here, not forgetting the Hakata Bus Terminal is just next to it with eateries, too. :)

As in most main Japanese train stations, this one is no different. It's modern, clean and full of shopping and eating options. It is attached to the bus terminal so it has 2 buildings of retail. We found the restaurant options at the bus terminal were better than the train station. It's a bit intimidating to navigate as the signs aren't always very apparent.

This is the main train station located in Hakatq of Fukuoka. It is linked to subways and JR trains to different parts of Japan. There are also many shops and eateries in the station and vicinity. If you don’t have much time to spend in Hakatq, you can just spend time here for your shopping and dining needs.

i guess everyone will get lost somewhere in hakata station because it is so huge and beyond the undergrounds are all shopping, foodie areas. The subway to the airport to the other side are all underground walks. It is a nice place to walk, shop, find food and get some souvenirs.

I was here over the Christmas period, it was beautifully decorated, lovely Christmas market and the station itself has a ton of shops and eating options. The place was alive and hopping on Friday, Saturday night until 10 PM or maybe even alittle after. Locals, tourists, everyone was there. If I could attach videos to this I would. You'll have to settle for pictures.

I'd actually like to see if they have festivals in summer and stuff.

We came here for food only as there were plenty of choices. Most eateries are on B1 or B2. The shopping isn’t as good and they are mostly big departmental stores. Better to go to Tenjin or Canal City mall. As for the supermarkets and eateries, there are plenty here.
