‘Hawkeye’: Hailee Steinfeld Breaks Down That Intense Swordfight

Nobody ever said playing a Marvel superhero was easy. In addition to getting buff and fitting into a superhero suit, actors are routinely called upon to master the kind of skills that tend to just be lies on resumes. For instance, for the role of Kate Bishop, Hawkeye star Hailee Steinfeld had to learn archery (duh) and she also had to learn how to be an expert fencer. Archery, martial arts, fencing—this just comes with the territory when you’re playing a superhero who never met an extracurricular activity that she couldn’t dominate!

Steinfeld gets to show off Kate Bishop’s fencing skills in Episode 2 of Hawkeye—spoilers ahead if you haven’t finished! It’s a super tense scene between Kate and her mom’s new fiancé, a debonair dude named Jacques Duquesne (Tony Dalton). The guy’s definitely got some secrets. We know that his character is based on a Marvel supervillain/sometime-Avenger named the Swordsman, but Kate doesn’t know that. The MCU isn’t that meta (yet). She challenges him to a fencing match, and the two spar right there in mom’s house.

So, what was it like fencing with Tony Dalton? And what’s it like having to become proficient in a number of weapons, all for one TV show? Hailee Steinfeld told Decider all about it when we spoke to her prior to the show’s premiere.

“Yeah, that [scene] was—” and Steinfeld just starts to laugh thinking back to the scene and how daunting a task that was. “I mean, to have things thrown at you—! In preparation for [Hawkeye], it was moments like [the sword fight] that I was working towards getting to a place mentally that I could have something like that come up and feel, you know, at all confident about it. But we had amazing people around us on set informing us on what to and how to do it, right. But yeah—it was fun.”

The first two episodes of Hawkeye show off plenty of Hailee Steinfeld’s newly acquired archery, martial arts, and fencing skills. Who knows what we’ll see next? I think I spied some gymnastics trophies with Kate Bishop’s name on them…
