About
The Haggin Museum, an art and history museum, has been referred to by Sunset magazine as “one of the undersung gems of California.” The art collection features works by noted 19th-century painters Albert Bierstadt, Rosa Bonheur, and William-Adolphe Bouguereau, along with many other American and European artists. The history displays focus on this area’s past and residents, including Charles Weber, Stockton’s founder; Benjamin Holt, inventor of the Caterpillar tractor; and Tillie Lewis, the “Tomato Queen.”

We are from the SF Bay Area and went to Modesto for our COVID-19 vaccination shots. On the way back, we decided to stop by a nearby Haggin Museum in Stockton. This museum is a real gem! Truly impressed! The museum has a world-class collection of art (Leyendecker, Bierstadt, Vibert, just to name a few) and some very interesting exhibits about local history. We are going to Modesto for the second shot in a few weeks and will certainly visit the Haggin Museum again to finish viewing the collection. Highly recommended!

This is an amazing museum. Lots of diverse exhibits. Downstairs is the so interesting. I loved the Native American baskets especially the beautiful Pomo baskets. The main level has some beautiful art. Loved the Vibert paintings. And I was surprised by the Leyendecker display on the upper level. Make sure you look in the drawers below in the Leyendecker display.

And a big shoot out to Kelly the guard. He was so kind to help accommodate me. And he was an excellent docent too!!! And a wonderful woman in the front. Great staff that were all so friendly.

Local history to modern art. Popular temporary exhibits and a fantastic collection of western landscapes and classic great masters. Bring your out of town guests to see one of the many reasons that Stockton is a magnificent place to live.

The museum at times have interesting exhibits however, it is in a terrible, unsafe area in Stockton. Would not go there alone or without at least one adult male in group.

This is a mix of art museum and local history museum. The permanent collection is mix of Hudson valley school heavy on Bierstadt and contemporaries as well as French academic style with a few early impressionists. We liked the general focus on the art collection. The museum also had temporary exhibit on car influenced paintings and then permanent eclectic collection on local history including industrial history. Admission for 8 including kids was modest $55. Good afternoon spent for our party.

My daughter and I had a free afternoon and visited the Haggin Museum together on a Saturday afternoon. Having just come from the Crocker Art Museum, the Haggin was a stark contrast on many fronts -- but it is a bit unfair of a comparison. The admission to the Haggin was discounted to $5 (make a point to drop a few extra $'s in their donation jar) as several of the galleries are under construction. The exhibits that were in place reflected the local community and there was a temporary exhibit on World War posters ... if you have seen the recent PBS series on the Great War, you will definitely find this a relevant, interesting and insightful exhibit. The people were friendly, the setting pleasant, and the potential evident. But frankly, on my visit, though enjoyable and a good way to spend an hour, it was average. I hope the very best for their renovation ... and will look forward to re-visit this museum as it grows to its potential.

If you are going through or to Stockton, don't miss the Haggin Museum! It is located in Victory Park on Pershing Avenue. The permanent exhibits such as the beautiful paintings of Bierstadt and the collection of Lyendecker art are just a couple of examples of why this museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. They always have interesting and family oriented exhibits and on a hot day it is the coolest place in town! It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so keep that in mind. Don't miss it!

This venerable Stockton fixture has had the facilities constantly upgraded, though it could use a cafe. The permanent exhibits feature some very well known paintings, including several Bierstadt paintings of Yosemite, and an extensive collection of JC Leyendecker illustrations. There are frequent temporary exhibits which are always interesting. The historical sections of the museum are very well done, instructive and often amusing.
There are frequent events, including ongoing evening programs featuring educational and/or entertaining presentations, with snacks and beverages. The children's programs have been greatly expanded.
Much credit to Todd Ruhstaller, CEO, and the other excellent staff.
A visit to The Haggin by locals and out-of-towners is an enriching experience. Check it out!

Whenever I'm in Stockton, California, I try to make time to visit The Haggin Museum. The recent Leyendecker exhibit, the Holt hall and other one-of-a-kind attractions set The Haggin apart, not only as a treasure trove of local history but also an entertaining venue that continues to improve and reinvent itself year after year.
