These 20 tracks include all the big early-'60s hits by this maverick artist, plus several obscure gems. Shannon was atypical of his era by virtue of age (26 when he had his first hit, "Runaway"), originality (he wrote most of his songs), aggression (unusually among white artists of the early '60s, most of his stuff rocked), and temperament (his songs weave an alarming pattern of misery, paranoia, desperation, vengeance, and despair). Not to mention musical innovation--"Runaway" contains what could be called the first pop synthesizer solo, "Little Town Flirt" casts the mold for the entire British Invasion, "From Me to You" was the first American version of a Beatles song, "Handy Man" transforms the bouncy Jimmy Jones novelty into a rock maelstrom, "Do You Want to Dance" anticipates the Beach Boys' subsequent rockin' reworking, "Keep Searchin'" and "Stranger in Town" could have been the soundtrack to The Fugitive, and "Sister Isabelle" is the ultimate boy-loses-girl song--Del's gal becomes a nun, and he rails at God for beating his time. It's not 100% brilliant--"Sue's Gotta Be Mine" is a blatant Four Seasons ripoff and "The Swiss Maid" is, as the title might warn, far from yodel-free--but this package is a neat summation of the career of a tragically overlooked artist. --Ken Barnes

I won't bang on about which is the best Del Shannon album or the fact that he was my favourite singer pre-Beatles. There are many Del Shannon albums out there to suit most needs and I have a lot of them already including all the tracks on this album. I bought it after reading somewhere that these Rhino Records digital transfers were taken directly from the original master tapes. I don't know that for a fact but as someone who has listened to Del Shannon records from the early '60s they sound great to me even though they were made in 1990. All his UK chart hits are here except for "Mary Jane" plus some others and they are all in Mono as the singles that were released in the '60s are. Even though I prefer Stereo to Mono some of his records were never recorded in Stereo so hopefully I now have the best of them. These days you have a hard time telling what source the music actually comes from, in some cases the tracks are lifted from vinyl recordings. As I said before if what I read is true that these recordings were taken from the original master tapes then I am quite satisfied with them.

As much Del Shannon as most people will probably need. The big hits sound great but the others, while good, did not leave me wanting more. Having said that, whether or not you like this, do not ignore 'Home and Away' which is his best album by far and gets more plays by me than this, despite having no 'hits' on it.

II's good to have 45 mono single versions of songs like "Little Town Flirt", "Do You Wanna Dance" "Keep Searching'" and "Stranger In Town" on cd at last, need to point out though that because the masters were lost for the "Big Top"/ Amy 45s they had to be dubbed from records, it sounds like that to me, probably the best sounding Disc dubs you are likely to hear of this stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album, not Hits and Filler!!!

He could really sing!!! He had a pleasing baritone voice and a great falsetto, somewhat like Lou Christie, but with less range, on the low end. He phrases well; I could understand every word. The sound quality is good hi-fi, although I wish the album was available in stereo.

The songs are excellent, with much variety, from folk to rock to covers, using the popular arrangements, but performed well. Many of the tracks could easily have been released as singles.

I don’t know why he wasn’t more successful. It’s sad that we lost him, as a side-effect of medication he was trying out, looking for a cure for depression, perhaps stemming from his relative lack of career success, as measured against his talent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Del. Shannon. I rest my case
Reviewed in the United States on 27 September 2018
Del Shannon was one of my absolute top favorites as a kid. One big hit after another for us lonely boys. (Before the Invasion I was a Beach Boys, 4 Seasons, Roy Orbison, Gene Pitney, Del Shannon kind of guy. And the girl groups.) My collection had a big hole in it - no Del Shannon. All the hits are here and some others I didn't remember. Great stuff and I love every one. Runaway is easily one of the greatest rock & roll songs ever. Then bam, back that up with Hats off to Larry (redemption!) If you don't know Del, maybe because you're too young, but you recognize any of those others I mentioned, give him a try. You'll be glad you did.
