The full and heated exchange between Graeme Souness, Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville that involved the Man Utd legend insisting Liverpool were outplayed for a large part of their 7-0 victory has been detailed.

The Red Devils travelled to Anfield hoping to confirm their status as a genuine title challenger with a win. Liverpool, meanwhile, entered the contest on the back of four successive clean sheets in the league and with renewed hope of snatching a place inside the top four.

The hosts led through Cody Gakpo at half-time, though Man Utd did create excellent chances that were not put away by Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford.

Nonetheless, it was Liverpool who dominated the possession stakes and the vast bulk of the first half was played in Man Utd’s half.

The second half saw the Reds score six unanswered goals with numerous Man Utd players losing their heads. Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and stand-in captain Fernandes were all guilty or abandoning their duties and throwing in the towel at critical times.

Erik ten Hag tripled down when labelling his side’s performance as “unprofessional” three separate times post-match. However, the biggest fireworks were in the Sky Sports studio.

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness had predicted a comfortable Liverpool win by two or three goals pre-match. The Scot’s prediction drew mocking glances from Neville and fellow Man Utd alumni Roy Keane.

Souness and Neville then engaged in a heated exchange in the studio after the dust settled, with the latter refusing to acknowledge Liverpool played well despite a 7-0 scoreline. The full transcript can be read below.

Graeme Souness v Gary Neville

Souness: “Can I just pull it back, Gary put it on me at the start of the show, if I would repeat on the air that I think Liverpool will win well today, comfortably. Gary said off the air that he thought Liverpool played badly today.”

Neville: “I didn’t say that.”

Souness: “What did you say?”

Neville: “I said first half I think Manchester United were the better team. In the second half it was just about Manchester United’s capitulation.”

Souness: “So that would be nothing to do with Liverpool playing well?”

Carragher [to Neville]: “You said you didn’t think Liverpool played well.”

Neville “I don’t think Jurgen Klopp… he’ll analyse that game tomorrow and the momentum he’ll take from that, he won’t think oh, we’re back. He won’t fall into that trap. They won’t get carried away off the back of that, Liverpool, at all.”

Souness: “We’re not talking about getting carried away, we’re talking about them playing well today.”

Neville: “Look at you gloating like little children.”

Souness: “No, because you just can’t come out with a daft remark saying Liverpool didn’t play well today.”

Neville: “My point is I’ve seen Liverpool play well for five or six years and they’ve put in some of the best performances I’ve ever seen. They’re still not back anywhere near that.”

Carragher: “So did Liverpool play well today?”

Neville: “They played alright in the second half, they won the game no problem. I’ve said congratulations, well done. Congratulations. My point is, when you get beat seven nil, it becomes about how bad the other team are. Manchester United in that second half – Luke Shaw, Varane, Martinez, Dalot, that midfield, they were an absolute shambles.”
