In “England Lost” and the accompanying 2017 solo single, “Gotta Get a Grip,” Mick Jagger offers political critiques of England and the U.S., respectively.
2016 proved to be a surprising and monumental year in global politics, particularly with regard to the June 23rd Brexit vote in the U.K. and the November 8th election of Donald J. Trump in the U.S. Focusing on the former in “England Lost,” Jagger reflects upon what England will look like in the future as a result of the ultra-nationalist, isolationist movement that endorsed the successful Brexit referendum.
In the first verse, Jagger initially frames the narrative as though he is attending a sporting event, where England loses. Yet, verses 2 and 3 suggest his deeper realization that England has “lost” much more than a game.
