Although infrequently used as the setting for a TV series, Boston was the setting of three shows that ran concurrently in the early 1980s: St. Elsewhere, Cheers, and Goodnight, Beantown. Much like The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Goodnight, Beantown dealt with the staff of a local television newsroom. Matt Cassidy and Jenny Barnes were co-anchors on the WYN evening news show, somewhat antagonistic but friendly competitors on the job, and sometimes lovers in private life. Amazingly, their professional rivalry seemed to have little negative impact on their romance. Others on the WYN staff were news director Dick Novak (replaced in the fall by anxiety-ridden Albert Addelson), news producer Sam Holliday, sexy feature reporter Valerie Wood, obnoxious sports reporter Frank Fletcher, and cameraman Augie Kleindab. The only regular away from the newsroom was the divorced Jenny's young daughter, Susan.
