Due to the show’s unfortunately preemptive demise, the stakes for Thursday’s Season 4 series finale of Good Girls were higher than ever. And by the end of these final two hours, not one, but two faces landed themselves behind prison bars.
But that wasn’t the only big change the ladies’ last hurrah served up. Families were made and destroyed, and an epic shifting of power (finally!) occurred right in front of our eyes. And, of course, Beth Boland learned what we had more or less suspected all along: No matter how hard she tried to change, her criminal intent was — and will always be — in her blood.
So who took the fall, who made it to Nevada and what cliffhanger anxiety are we now left with for the rest of our TV-loving lives? Let’s recap!
‘WE’RE EVEN’ | Beth is polling very high in her run for city council, and a win could certainly help her and the agents. She tells Phoebe and Dave that she knows Nick can be taken down for money laundering, bribery and extortion, and it’s all wrapped up in Nick’s plans to create a “friendly neighborhood rec center.” But, the agents throw a curveball, forcing the women to get the info they need without a warrant.
The women use Annie’s “hoo-ha” to get inside the city’s office building, but once there they find Nick’s office is sealed tight with some sort of electronic scan reader. Mission: Unaccomplished.
A conversation with Kevin about dating apps gives Annie an idea. She once again uses her “hoo-ha,” only this time she goes on a date with Nick’s assistant, Scott, who has the exact keycard they need. She borrows the dude’s coat, uses his card to scan into Nick’s office, and while Beth gets to photocopying all of Nick’s dirty deeds, Annie hightails it back to the bar.
Beth gets phone records, bank accounts, names, numbers and more, but when she gets back to the car to report her findings to Ruby, Vance is waiting for them. “None of this looks good for a lady who’s tough on crime,” he says.
When Beth gets home, she’s not happy with Dean. Vance is now blackmailing Beth to convince the city to plug his face creams for use in city hotels and convention centers. She’s too disgusted to talk any further, but on her way out of the room she says, “I really did want Nevada.”
When a key turns up in the wrong spot, Nick looks at the night logins. He figures it all out, and brings a photo of Annie and Scott to Rio, who finds the fact that his brother/cousin got played to be prettaaaay, prettaaaay funny. But when Nick confronts Beth about it, she asks what happens next (expecting murder to be her punishment for conning him). But that’s not Nick’s style. He knows people. He also knows Dean and Annie’s records, and that with a simple phone call for Ruby’s tax returns, she won’t be able to afford Harry’s private school. If this was a chess match, Nick would surely be calling: Check.
In the final moments of hour one, Rio shows up and says Beth hurt his feelings. If she needs something, all she has to do is ask, he says. “He’s in our way,” he says. The two sternly lock eyes.
‘NEVADA’ | At the top of the finale (sad face emoji), Beth learns she officially won the election. However, Rio blows off a meeting with her and the agents, and when she visits him to ask where the hell he was, he slides an envelope her way. “To keep your hands clean,” he says.
Dean and Stan turn up the heat on Vance. They want their wives left out of whatever BS the pyramid scheme owner has planned. They threaten physical violence, and Vance hands them a bat. “The only way you’re going to shut me up is to kill me,” he says, and YES, DEAN, JUST DO IT PLEASE. (Sorry, Breckin Meyer.)
As Beth gives her acceptance speech to the press, Ruby and Annie leave envelopes marked “PRESS” on windshields. The journalists begin asking Beth if she knew that Councilman Nick used city projects for kickbacks and money laundering. Beth defends him, and says she’ll do anything she can to maintain the community’s trust. Meanwhile, Nick’s phone is blowing up, and for the first time, the guy is shook.
Phoebe and Dave give ol’ Nick a visit. Nick turns the table on Rio, strongly implying that his “brousin” is the cause of it all. “But his name isn’t on any of this,” says Dave. All of the companies in question are actually run by their grandmother. Looks like granny’s gonna need a lawyer.
At the next meeting of the bros, Vance (who is, sadly, very much still alive) announces the company is kickstarting a hair care line. And he wants Dean and Stan to head it up.
Ruby finds Vance to be just as annoying as I do, so she seizes the moment to pitch the family’s relocation to Nevada. And who’s gonna pay for that, Stan asks. Ruby pulls out envelopes full of cold, hard, beautiful cash.
Annie pitches a getaway to Kevin, who’s back living in a homeless community. She bought an RV and wants him to go on a permanent Spring Break with her.
Mick shows up to Beth’s house, and if we’ve learned just one thing on this show, it’s that whenever Tattoo Man arrives unannounced, it’s never a good thing. He puts on black gloves and pulls a gun on her. “My kids are upstairs,” Beth says. So he puts a silencer on the pistol, AND SHOOTS HER DOWN.
IT WAS ALL A DREAM | In the very next scene, the Bolands are in a brand new house, and Beth’s sporting a bandaged shoulder. In this alternative… whatever it is… Annie wakes up on a couch outside her RV with Kev. They’re parked in a Nevada desert somewhere, along with Ben. Meanwhile, Ruby and Stan don matching orange shirts. They’re also out west with their plan of kickstarting a nail salon. Is this all too good to be true?
During a routine trip to the grocery store, Beth finds herself in the middle of a robbery. She tells the amateur thug not to bother: Not only do they clear out the registers in the morning, but the manager likely already signaled the police. And if he tries to snag her purse, she’ll just stall him, and the cops will be right outside. “Do you want to die?” he asks. Her response: “Kinda.”
What the women underestimated was the toll the move would take on their kids. Ben’s new team won’t let him change in the boys’ locker room, while Sara’s health issues take a turn for the worse. Annie and Ruby begin to second-guess their decision, but Beth tells them they’ll get through it. “I’ve been knitting.”
And just as this series began, the women don their new masks and hold up the grocery store. Beth is shot by a carrying customer, and as she bleeds out in “Nevada,” she sees an apparition of Fitzpatrick. “What did you think was going to happen?” he asks. “You can’t run from who you are, Beth. How many times have I told you that?”
When she wakes up, we see that Nevada was all an illusion. As police swarm her Michigan home, she’s asked who shot her, but she says she doesn’t know.
CHANGE OF PLANS | Beth tells Ruby and Annie that she’s not going to Nevada after all. She’s come to the conclusion that nothing will be different. “Except you won’t be a criminal,” says Ruby. “Exactly,” Beth replies. The women say she’s lucky Mick missed, but Beth knows better. Mick left the gun behind on purpose.
Rio then visits Nick… who is behind bars! “You’re gonna leave her be,” Rio tells his cuz. But Nick already has a play in motion. The gun Mick used was the gun that killed Lucy. The same gun that previously had Beth’s fingerprints allll over it.
Annie, meanwhile, tells Ben and Kevin that she can’t go to Nevada because she’s in a little bit of trouble. (Understatement of the century.) We then see Annie put all of her credit cards, her phone and her ring inside a large envelope. She stands up and an officer slaps bracelets on her wrists. (Perhaps this is what Nick meant when he said he could “makes things more difficult?” Or did Annie ask Mick for a certain favor a few episodes back?)
Ruby tells Stan they need to wait to make their move, but he says she can meet them out there when she decides which family she wants to be with. Ouch.
During the last park-bench meeting with Rio we’ll ever be privy to, Beth tells him that the best part of all this is: “You work for me now.”
“You got it, boss,” he dutifully replies.
It’s literally the moment we’ve been waiting for all series long. And it’s the last we’ll ever see of Good Girls.
Despite the circumstances, did you like how it all shook out? We know you’ve got thoughts, and we want to hear ’em. Grade the episode and season below, then light up the Comments!
OK consider me royally pissed that with Beth officially Rio’s boss and there would have been loads of potential for much more Brio they go and axe the show. WTF!!!! The episodes were really good which makes the cancellation suck even more!!!!!
By far the worst part is leaving it with Annie going off to jail. Boo. Not a very good series finale. I realize they didn’t know they were getting canceled, but boo on NBC for not letting them reshoot a real finale.
I know I should be sad about that but Brio was the main attraction for me!!! Such a shame. Based on reports I think Christina and Manny didn’t get along and the TV execs wouldn’t increase his salary. Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!
I thought it was simply the low ratings and cost of production. Didn’t hear anything about Manny and Christina fighting.
This was the article about why it didn’t move forward with a shortened fifth and final season https://tvline.com/2021/07/07/good-girls-cancellation-why-nbc-season-4/
I tried to post the link but if you search this website for What’s on TV tonight and then go to Good Girls there is a link about why it was cancelled.
They must be absolutely brilliant actors, because their on-screen chemistry is smoldering.
Annie & the gun:
There was a scene in an earlier episode, Annie & Mick were in a vehicle with the gun that killed Lucy. Annie mentioned something along the lines of she wishes her prints were on the gun. Annie was at a low point and wanted to take the fall for Beth.
Wow, I did not remember that. I loved the show and am very sad it is gone now.
Thank you for this! I was so confused on why Annie ended up going to jail and why Phoebe called it a “sibling rivalry”. It all makes sense now lol.
The thing is the show was highly popular on Netflix. Why they didn’t pick it up is baffling.
AGREE!
Because Manny and Christina did not get along off screen. The girls even agreed to take a pay cut to continue another season but Manny wouldn’t agree to it. Heartbreaking.. I would love to see more of them.
Has Netflix said no to picking up the show? That’s too bad. I enjoyed the show, not the best writers, but well acted and plenty of things happening. I’m sad it was cancelled. Sorry for Annie. Glad Beth is rid of her weak hubby. Love Beth as the BOSS
Maybe netix still will you never know! Petition anyone?
I’m afraid Sparky 7 is actually correct, at least partially. NBC was on the fence about renewing the show, but the sour relationship between the actors was indeed real.
I am disappointed in Christina Hendricks’ talking down about Manny Montana on a public forum. I wanted to express my opinion somewhere. I really just enjoy a good show which this was as well enjoying the actors’ talents. That is all I need to know. As far as her comment about thinking it was stupid for Manny to call her Chris, how petty can one get. She is full of herself and her importance. Anyone with a three syllabul name automatically gets a nickname and Chris would be the likely choice. He did nothing wrong In fact, it shows an affectionate gesture to give someone a nickname. If she was that upset she could have told him not to call her Chris. It damaged her image in my opinion to hear her say this on a public tv program. Manny Montana is a far better actor than she is an actress on the TV show Good Girls! Furthermore, I have never heard of any shows being cancelled if the actors would not take a pay cut. And I never heard of any actors fighting to stay on and offering to take a pay cut. If the show is being cancelled, the actors just gracefully accepted that and moved on.
But why couldn’t he just respect her wishes and call her by her name. Wasn’t a hard thing to do.
100% AGREE!
Yes!
I totally agree
Agree. Waited for way more of BRIO. Great chemistry!
I absolutely agree with you.
Why is Annie in jail?
Her prints were on the gun left at the scene, and that particular gun was used in other murders/crimes.
the review said Beth’s fingerprints were on the gun. Was that a typo?
I thought Beth’s prints were on the gun. Rio made her pick up the gun in a bag. It was used for leverage. This twist with Annie going to jail was confusing.
Wish there was another season.
In one of the episodes Annie asked Mick for a favor–to let her put her prints on the gun.
Thanks, Helen! I didn’t remember that!! I was also wondering why Annie was in jail.
I agree with you Pat J I’m still confused!!!
very confusing episode.
Agree! Very confusing episode. Disappointing as well. Two thumbs down.
YES ANOTHER SEASON!!!
Agree why is Annie in jail & not Beth? Confused.
In an episode earlier this season Annie begged Mick to let her clean off Beth’s fingerprints and put her own on the gun so she could take the fall if the gun was ever used to bring down the girls/Beth.
Beth thought that the gun used to kill Lucy & shoot Beth would have her (Beth’s) fingerprints on it because she didn’t know that Annie had put hers on instead.
Wouldn’t it make more sense to just wipe the gun of ALL fingerprints rather than Annie asking to replace them with her’s? Or use the fingerprints of someone else?
I was confused about that also so have to assume it is because she was discovered on film breaking into the office and stealing documents. Also, it appears that at some point in time earlier in the season she might have put her fingerprints on the gun in order to take the fall for Beth. In any case, the finale was an EPIC FAIL for me as it was filmed as a season finale and never changed for a series finale.
I wish there was a way to get a 5th season, because there were so many loose ends.
It’s the end of an era. I enjoyed it while it lasted, but I’m sure gonna miss this show.
Same here, it was the only show worth committing myself to.
Annie was arrested for breaking into the councilman’s office, because he set things up to make Beth’s life difficult before his life became difficult. Annie said she was in a “little” trouble, which doesn’t add up to Lucy’s murder.
The gun ended up in the hands of the federal agents who were on vacation. They never processed the gun and that is how Beth got off.
This is not at all accurate.
What do you think this series finale really is all about? I found it good til the end and then it seemed very confusing.
That makes sense to me more than the other scenario, especially since it was actually filmed as a season not series finally
Thank you. I was really confused, your input makes it a lot clearer.
Why did Annie get arrested if Beths fingerprints were all over the gun???
Annie’s were. They were planted there. She was set up by Nick.
When? How? How did Nick get her prints? Did Annie know this bc she was already shaking when the girls were in the bed talking about the gun? Ugh!
I think that they took her prints off Nick’s assistants key card!!!
There was a scene in an earlier episode, Annie & Mick were in a vehicle with the gun that killed Lucy. Annie mentioned something along the lines of she wishes her prints were on the gun. Annie was at a low point and wanted to take the fall for Beth.
I think the ending was satisfying. I think Beth is an idiot. If the show continued, I don’t see how she would not get arrested. I mean, Phoebe & Dave would be laser focused on her
Phoebe & Dave need their own show or occasional movie on cable.
The only way I like this ending is if we look at it as Beth possibly setting up the whole thing to make Annie take the fall—then she turns complete heel.
Thant’s how I took it — Beth (along with Rio?) set Annie up to take the fall .
Omg that would have been awesome! Brutally wrong on Beth and Rio’s part but def an awesome storyline.
I’m confused why Annie is in jail and not Beth. If it’s Beth’s finger prints, how is she not involved. Did Nick set it up so Annie would go? Is that what he meant by “hit her where it hurts”? Someone help explain!
This earlier article explains it: https://www.cbr.com/good-girls-breaks-annie-could-result-prison-time/amp/
I am confused on why Annie went to jail… someone explain please….
I think she went to jail for shooting her sister. Her prints were on the gun. They said something about sibling rivalry.
I’m confused as to why Beth wasn’t more concerned about her sister going to jail.
Me too! After Annie is arrested Beth is sitting happily at the park with her kids and seem unconcerned about anything. Then she and Rio seem friendly; he is totally out of character, and then she says to Rio, “ you work for me now” and he agrees and calls her boss. So she is still a councilwoman but why is she Rio’s boss?? It’s not like he has a boss or answers to anyone anyway??! I wish someone could explain these inconsistencies to me; between Beth & Rio & Beth’s new unconcern for her sister Annie!!
Me too. I don’t get this either.
Ya not happy how it ended. Beth is not shook at all that her sister is in jail. Annie is a mom too. So wrong. Terrible ending.
I’m a bit confused. If it was Beth’s prints that were on the gun, why did Annie go to jail? Did Beth help set up her own sister to take the rap the same way Nick did to Rio when they were young?
I just found the answer to my own question! Apparently I forgot this from an earlier episode, but it was explained in this article from a few months back: https://www.cbr.com/good-girls-breaks-annie-could-result-prison-time/amp/
No, Nick set her up. That what he meant by “hit her where it hurts”
Good Girls was just a fun and entertaining show with good actors. It had enough twists and turns to make it interesting. I am sad to see it end. The last episode was a little confusing. A lot was crammed in to a short time. Why was Beth going to become Rio’s boss. Why did Annie get arrested? There’s plenty for another season . So sad.
Correct, Pat. Nick knew that Annie put her prints on the gun instead of Beth. Because Mick was actually on Nick’s payroll. Not Rio’s. Nick really was the boss of the operation. So, Rio was doing a lot for him. Nick took what Rio said earlier and used it against Beth. He “hit her where it hurt”, which was her family. But, I imagine Rio and Beth would have found a way to get Annie out if they had a S5. This is why Phoebe and Dave where so confused and said “her prints are all over it” when they saw the gun. Then said, “Sibling rivalry?”, trying to recall why Annie’s prints would be on the gun that shot Beth. I imagine S5 would have them all unraveling it. But Phoebe and Dave don’t work homicide, which is why they said it’s not their case anymore.
In an earlier episode, Annie asks Rio’s henchman Mick to put her fingerprints on the gun, because she thought Beth was a better mother than her and it would be better if she took the rap. https://youtu.be/U1tqt8D9UhI
NBC is THE WORST
So confused! What happens with Ruby and why did Annie go to jail? Who is the bad guy? Rio or Nick?
Maybe if this season 4 finale had been the season 3 finale the show would still be on the air.
Final show SUCKED
I want Annie out and the show to continue
LOVED all the other shows however
I just need to know is there any hint of Beth and Rio ending up together?
I am disappointed and confused about the ending did beth set Annie up or did Rio
Or his cousin / brother does Dean go to jail
I know the show had to end not really sure
Why but the ending totally sucked they could have at least giving it a better ending what a waste of time watching it now everyone has to guess what happened to all the characters really ???!!!😒
#FreeAnnie #SaveGoodGirls
Ugh. If only they could of done those wrap up episodes. Such a shame. So much left. It hurts. :(
Confused- why was Annie arrested?
So Beth turned in her sister?? How did that happen if Beth’s prints were on the gun? Loved the show from the beginning but HATE this confusing and unclear ending. I have more questions now. What a stupid ending that doesn’t jive with Beth’s loyalty to her sister. Huh!?!?
Thumbs down!!!
No. That’s not what happened.
Annie asked Mick (Rio’s henchman) to put her fingers on the gun instead of Beth’s. This was a few episodes back. Then that gun was used to shoot Beth in the finale (after previously being used to murder Lucy). Mick shot Beth, then left the gun there so that it would be discovered with Annie’s fingerprints on it. That’s why Phoebe and the other cop said it was “sibling rivalry” in the finale. Nick (brother cousin) said he was going to “hit Beth where it hurts” which meant he was behind the shooting of Beth and Annie’s arrest. That’s why Rio told him to “leave her be” or whatever, and to stop using his guy (Mick) for dirty work.
Ok, but how did Nick know that the fingerprints are now Annie’s and not Beth’s? Was the ‘swapping prints’ not a favour? I don’t think Mick would go around telling everyone that he let Annie swap the prints. Doesn’t make sense to me. Also, when Mick works for Rio (his direct boss) why would he do this job for Nick especially when he knows how find Rio is if Beth
Exactly!! I totally agree with everything you said!!
I wish someone would explain it better than the synopsis did.
I blame the producers. They must have realized the show would be cancelled and should have made a real finale. So many shows do that and it’s really inconsiderate. There’s no thought given to the viewers.
From what I gather, they were extremely likely for renewal up until after they actually filmed the last episode, not sure if it would have been possible to rewrite/film the closing scenes.
Kinda like how Deadwood ended (before the movie). They all thought they were coming back.
I love the ending other than the sister going to jail. I will miss this show.
Same here Linda 😞
That ending was the worst. The writer and network should be ashamed. The fans followed along this entire time to leave so many unanswered questions. What a crock of crap. Totally jacked up.. grrrrrr…. The worst. … So disappointed!
You left Dean and his final tears out of the recap!
The Annie stuff just doesn’t make sense.
Hard to believe that it’s over.
Yeah was thinking the same.. all the recaps I read left out Dean and it seems that he left Beth too..
Unfair to leave the show hang like this.
An ending was truly deserved
No one set Annie up to put her fingerprints on the gun. She asked a favor from Rio’s henchman Nick to put her own prints on the gun in an earlier episode, in order to spare her sister who she thought was a better mom. Here is the clip: https://youtu.be/U1tqt8D9UhI
So many unanswered questions. Why did Annie go to jail when Beth’s fingerprints were on the gun? Hated that! Did Dean leave Beth? Did Ruby go away with her family? Do Rio & Beth work together?
Hated the ending.
Fran, I also don’t understand how Annie’s prints got on the gun either??? We all know Beth previously touched the gun. How did Nick accomplish that?? Annie should not have gone to jail! I believe the rest of your synopsis is what was implied. I’m so disappointed that we didn’t get the ending we were all hoping for!!
The reason Annie’s prints were on the gun is explained dozens of times in this feed. There’s also clips on here posted of the episode showing how Annie’s prints got there. I’m not being rude so I apologize if my message sounds that way. I was also so confused about how Annie’s prints got on there so I came here for answers. Once u read how it happened, it all makes sense.
This can not be it there is so much more to be told
It is sucks the viewers and so called fans didn’t show up for the 4th season. And thanks to NBC for saving the show a couple of times and keeping on the air for 4 years with those paltry ratings,
