The fourth oldest college of Cambridge and definitely one of the grandest in terms of Nobel Laureates and monumental buildings. The main building with tall narrow windows and blind arcades remind of the Flemish architecture in Belgium and Netherlands. The three-sided Caius Court is really four sides as the fourth is blocked of from Senate House Passage by a wall and gatehouse

We visited here as part of the Cambridge open day for students. No prior booking. Probably the most friendly and warm welcome we got all day. A lovely tour by an ex student over many buildings with loads of questions. Saw rooms, eating facilities and the library. Central and close to all the amenities and a very old college. This is one you may not know but is super impressive. Beautiful gardens as well as buildings and a lovely vibe about the place. Impressive

This is one of the few colleges that allows visitors. I went in to sign on Prof Hawking's condolence book and also to have a look. The college grounds and the chapel are free to roam around.

Easily the most beautiful of all the Cambridge colleges both in terms of its architecture and its atmosphere. Despite being in the centre of Cambridge, tourists rarely find it and its high walls shut out the banal wittering of tour guides and cantankerous screeching of children. Making this an oasis hidden away within the busiest part of Cambridge. Its tree-lined avenue and airy courts make one feel as though one is in the countryside despite the bustling city just metres away.

As an old Caius man (known as "Locksmiths"), I was here in the 1950s, when Gussy "Cold Breath" Atherston; Trevor Fforde-Smithers (aka "The Fistula") and Ben Oger-Beastmoran ("The Beast of the Backs") were up. We caused havoc! Our old college is a haven of tranquil pleasures - famous for the charred toes of old boy "Smokey Joe" Parsons, burnt at the stake (by mistake) in Oxford. Do try and pop in - the chapel and hall are especially fine.

The cost of student teaching at a Cambridge college is around £5000 more than the tuition fees passed on by the government. The majority of this extra amount is donated by former members of the colleges. Many colleges earn further income by holding conferences and letting student rooms when the students are on vacation. Gonville & Caius is a good one to choose for this purpose, since it is very central (next to King's). For £46.50 you can sleep in an admittedly basic and ancient traditional room in one of the old courts of the main college. You may be woken earlier than you intended by the bells of the adjacent Great St Mary's Church. Included is a full English breakfast in the old hall, lined with paintings of former masters and of Stephen Hawking, the theoretical physicist. The chapel is also worth a visit.

Rarely is something so fabulous hidden in plain sight! This college, so rich in history, is wedged between Trinity and King‘s, and despite it being in plain sight, most tourists just walk by. Some are turned off by the fact that the magnificent gate is locked. Well, it always is because the entrance to the college actually is in Trinity Street, opposite The Michaelhouse Café...
The college has three stunning courts, the first being the impressive Tree Court, where several of the interesting little monuments etc. Are located, including the Crick memorial right by the Great Gate. Read up on the college, it is worth it. It will also make you appreciate the three gates of virtue, humility and honour (the latter being absolutely spectacular, with a great view of King‘s Chapel) much more. Visit the chapel, and plan to attend an Evensong if you can, even if you are not religious. The choir is one of the best in Cambridge. Have a walk around in this calm oasis in the centre of town - you will not be disappointed.

I stopped by Gonville and Caius to sign the commemoration book for Stephen Hawking. The chapel where it was is stunning, as you would expect. There was a short queue, but there were multiple books one could sign, as there had obviously been so many people going there.
The college itself is stunning. Old stone buildings with beautiful courtyards between them. The outside of the college is just a plain stone wall with a few, high windows. But if you get the chance to go inside, it's a lovely place to look around.

Tree court is one of the prettiest courts in Cambridge and seeing it for the first time draws you into this lovely and warm space from the hustle of Trinity Street. The college has one of the highest entrance requirements and has produced a string of Nobel Laureates. It is the college of Stephen Hawking, Francis Crick, Joseph Needham, William Harvey and many other notables.
