- TravelingSoccerLoonSaint Paul, Minnesota3,596 contributionsIconic Bridge with Many Ways to ExperienceIconic structure and maybe the most famous bridge in the world. It represents San Francisco and the state of California as much as anything. Several ways to experience. Easiest is to drive across. No toll northbound but there is a toll when returning to the city southbound. There are some great viewing points on the north side of the bridge in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area including a viewpoint found by taking the 2nd exit after crossing the bridge when headed northbound and a couple nice viewpoints on Conzelman Road (one way accessed by going through the Baker-Barry Tunnel). You can also bike or walk across the bridge in a pedestrian/bike lane. There are boats trips from along the Embarcadero that tour San Francisco Bay. We've done all of those, but this time we splurged on a helicopter tour with San Francisco Helicopter Tours, and it was amazing.Visited October 2022Written April 26, 2023
- BrummieMoBirmingham, United Kingdom93 contributionsBreathtakingAn iconic site that doesn't disappoint. Fantastic views back to San Francisco. But be aware that if you go on the open bus tour it can be very chilly on the top deck as it is always windy going over the bridge so wear something warm.Visited April 2023Written April 30, 2023
- baird t51 contributionsABSENT THE FOG A STUNNING VIEW OF THE BAYThe iconic bridge connects San Francisco over the bay to north California. The view of the city and complete bay is terrific.....dramatic. After crossing there's an exit where you can stop and take photos, use the restrooms and enjoy the going and coming traffic over the Bridge below.Visited May 2023Written May 5, 2023
- PegersNorthern Ireland, United Kingdom75 contributionsA cycle ride like no otherWe hired two bikes from Golden Gate rentals in San Fran and headed off to the bridge, stopping off at a market on the way. The weather was dry and sunny, although when we got to the bridge it was a little windy. Having cycle across we made our way to Sausalito for lunch with the option of a ferry back but we decided we were feeling fit so cycled back across the bridge, having made it up the very steep hill from Sausalito. The wind had picked up and it was more difficult going across but we made it and got back to the rental shop having completed 19 miles. Not for the unfit!!Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 22, 2023
- RASA7 contributionsGolden Gate DriveSee this magnificent structure up close was an awesome experience. Just driving across and stopping to take in the view is great. Didn’t realize there was a ferry ride to Alcatraz, so it on the bucket list part 2. Would recommend as a must see.Visited February 2023Written May 29, 2023
- Ray McGuirePortimao, Portugal368 contributionsA Must See in San FranciscoThis is a magnificent bridge in one of the most picturesque settings in the world. It was one of the places that we really want to see when we came to San Francisco. We were on a BigBus Tour and although it was really cold crossing over the bridge it was great once we got to the North Vista Point stop. We got to take lots of pictures including one of us with the Golden Gate Bridge behind us. I'm really glad we got the opportunity to see this while we were here in San Francisco. I would definitely recommend this to anybody wanting to see the iconic Golden Gate Bridge on their trip to San Francisco.Visited June 2023Written June 6, 2023

I've always wanted to see the Golden Gate bridge and finally had the chance in May 2023. Park your car or take an uber/lyft to Battery East parking lot for an unobstructed view of the bridge.Visited May 2023Traveled soloWritten June 8, 2023
- WikumjBromley, United Kingdom327 contributionsIconicCome for one of the iconic viewpoints in the whole of USA. In fact there are multiple viewpoints across both sides of the bridge. WE were fairly limited on time so were satisfied with the view from the South side of the bridge. There is a small shop and welcome centre here though fairly minimal exhibits. There are however multiple great vantage points even just on the same side of the bridge so we spent about 45 minutes wandering around taking photos from different angles, which all came out great.Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten June 18, 2023
- Journeys of Two by Four and ReekapeekaGreenacres, Florida108 contributionsLovely! This was lovey. So aww inspiring. Instead of doing the boat cruise to the bridge, we drove over it and went to the other side and took pictures. No need to pay for the cruises, unless you want to take pictures from that angle.Visited June 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 1, 2023
- nzwestieHamilton & Waikato Region, New Zealand458 contributionsBiked it, seen it, done itBeen there done that. If you are in San Fran you got to do it right? We hired bikes from Blazing Bikes and took off. Road across the bridge and back again. Did not want to carry on and find the ferry to get back. We enjoyed the bike ride, loved the scale of the bridge but no need to do again. Just one of a few things you should do when in San Fran - that is the only reason it gets the higher review than I would give it. Enjoyed riding all around the place on way back to Blazing Bikes.Visited May 2023Written July 1, 2023

I wanted a moment of relaxation since I was visiting for a funeral. So with my rental car I drove over the bridge to Sausalito, CA. I had heard that you have to pay a fee and in a timely manner. I crossed at 5:20 pm I called the next morning at 8:00 am to pay the fee. I do not have a Fastrak account as I only planned to cross the one time. The customer service person took my credit card information and gave me a confirmation number. Then like a 1 to 2 weeks later I get a letter from the car rental company saying the bridge fee was not paid now I owe them $15 plus the bridge fee. I call the car rental billing department they tell me I have to call the Bay Bridge to discuss. I call the Bay Bridge company and they tell me as a one time courtesy they will reverse the charges if I send them a copy of the car rental agreement. I send them the car rental agreement and they write back that I have to pay the car rental company. What the heck! I call back the Bay Bridge Fastrak they tell me that I would have had to pay the bridge fee the same day for it to record ( why didn't their person that took the payment tell me that) and why did the other customer service person tell me they would reverse the charge. The customer service team needs some retraining. Very frustrating. I just want everyone who crosses the bridge to pay the fee online in the same day or call. Car rental companies do not inform you fully of this either.

Have always wanted to walk over the bridge and was thrilled when we found ourselves in San Francisco. We took a taxi to the bridge and got dropped off at a car park which had a small gift shop, toilets and a small upmarket cafe (takeaway style).
On the way we had driven past bicycle rentals and we naively thought there would be some near the bridge which wasn't the case. We had also expected there would be some coffee shops, restaurants etc right near the entrance which we could spend time in before/after setting off however thats also not the case. (Whilst I can't mark this down for those issues they did reduce the whole experience).
We walked around half way across, had great views of the bay behind us with the opportunity for lots of pictures. The center is quite cold so take a jacket due to the extra breeze. It's quite noisy too, so for those with children I would recommend ear plugs. There's also no bins, so bear this in mind before you head off.
Was a long wait for a taxi to arrive so if you have data, would recommend get an Uber or wait for someone being dropped off in one.

Great to see the whole bridge for once without any fog. It is truely spectacular and we rode across it in the Hop on Hop off bus and took in the spectacular views of the city from the other side, then returned. We also rode across it on push bikes which was even better. It has a dedicated land for bikes so no need to dodge pedestrians but some riders are very aggressive so care is still needed.

We rode the Big Bus Hop On Hop Off bus and the first journey was northbound from the Presidio to the North Vista Point. You get a different perspective of the bridge from the top of an open upper level of a bus. You see the massive Art Deco Towers, the suspension cables and the hangers that support the deck of the bridge. We got off at the North Vista Point in Marin County and enjoyed the view of the bridge and San Francisco in the distance. We then went into Sausalito for a few hours on the Big Bus again. On the way back we went southbound over the bridge and made a U-turn in the Presidio and stopped at the Golden Gate Bridge Visitor Center on the south end of the bridge. From there you could walk back across the bridge and take the returning San Francisco Hop On Hop Off bus back. We were pressed for time and will walk the bridge on another occasion. The Sausalito Hop On Hop Off bus then went back north on the bridge back to North Vista Point where we boarded the SF Hop On Hop Off bus back to the City. On this leg, we crossed the bridge a fourth time enjoying the view again from the top of the bus. It was thrilling.

My 2nd wife and I currently live 210 miles apart with the Golden Gate Bridge about midway between us, so we both often drive across this bridge going to and from our two households. Inevitably, two thoughts come to mind as I cross.
1) My Dad was born in 1911 and lived through the tough times after the stock market crash in 1929. Work was difficult to find, so, like so many others who rode the rails as a hobo, he too did so, wanting to escape the terribly depressed area he lived in west of Chicago. He wound up in a 'hobo camp' underneath the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge and eventually ended up helping mix and pour concrete for the project. So, I virtually find it impossible, even as many times as I have crossed this marvelous bridge, to not think about my Dad while doing so, who helped construct it.
2) About five years ago, while on my way yet again to spend some time with my wife, I was nearing the Golden Gate Bridge. The weather was windy, cold, and raining, at times heavily. I was listening to a local radio station which noted, even though it was rainy, windy, cold and in general nasty, many people were still walking the Golden Gate Bridge. So, the radio station decided to send a reporter to the bridge and ask them why they were walking the bridge in such nasty weather. There were a variety of reasons given, often because they were there and it was their only opportunity, but then there was this one woman, who was visiting from somewhere in Europe who said......."I have been visiting in this wonderful country for almost two months and I am soon going to return to my home. With time, many of my memories will fade and some disappear, but I'll NEVER forget the Golden Gate Bridge1"

The Golden Gate Bridge never disappoints, beautiful always. Park your car, or get there by bus, taxi or Uber go to visitor center to stamp your Amazing Places/Parks Book, get a nice souvenir with the terracota color of the bridge and then walk all the way and come back. This walk can be busy, but you will have the opportunity to take amazing pictures of the bridge structure, of SanFran, or Alcatraz, the sunset, etc. Just enjoy it!!!

Bucket list item. Was staying in Cow Hollow and walked through Presidio to the bridge. The actual walk across the bridge was slightly over 2.5kms. Took a bus back which is not included in the standard travel card I bought and cost me $7 one way. The bridge crossing however is free and I would highly recommend to anybody visiting San Francisco. Usually pedestrians are on one side and bicycles on the other however due to maintenance work, pedestrians and cyclists had to share the same side. Keep a look out for the seals under the bridge which you tend to miss driving across. No regrets.

It is the ver symbol of San Francisco and the main touristic attraction.
It was an awesome experience..
There are many ways to get there and have views.
We just took a bus from downtown (not a city/local bus but an outbound bus) which cost us no extra fees, since we had bought a 7 days pass at the SF Tourist Office on 4th street, near Moscone Center.
We walked across the bridge. It was an amazing walk.
It was a clear, windy day, the view of San Francisco from the bridge was breathtaking.
We LOVED the bridge: this 1.7 mile-long suspension bridge is a marvel of engineering and has been declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
We loved the wind!
Unforgettable experience.

Anytime, day or night, this bridge evokes San Francisco. The light, fog, time of day, and position make it singular and unforgettable. A feat of engineering, and exquisitely beautiful.
Enjoy!

I chose to bike across. Stopped at both view points.
Bring a jacket- gets windy.
Don't bother going into the bridges information building- just a tourist trap with overpriced souvenirs that you can get in Chinatown for half the price.

Hi there,
So in March '23 my mom and I have a 5 hour layover in SFO before connecting back to Amsterdam. Would there be enough time to see the golden gate bridge and get back to the airport again if we get an Uber? We just want to see it and return to the airport again. Our time window is between 9.30AM and 1PM on a Friday as we probably need to get though customs again as we left the airport.

You could do that. It would be a close thing, but the traffic during this hours is no too bad.

As a past resident and frequent visitor of the GG Bridge, Fort Point, Sausalito I transversed the bridge many times. The best one way walk excursion would be to get a lift from the S.F. side to the North side and walk back across for free enjoying the view of S.F. Don’t forget there are historic sites under the bridge at both ends that make for great pictures of the bridge and city.

Yes, there are places on both sides of the bridge at the Scenic lookout... on the City side, you can take a selfie all along the path on the East side of the bridge with the best picture standing at the path where it splits between the "walking side of the bridge" and the path going under the bridge for bike riders. On the West lookout point, you can take a selfie all along the parking lot stone wall.

I am landing in the San Fran lnternational terminal at 12:45pm with a domestic flight departing from the same airport at 8pm.
Please can I have an idea of the most efficient way to see (best views) and walk the bridge, before grabbing a crab chowder at the dock and returning to the airport. I probably have 2-3 clear hours.
Thanks!

That's a resounding yes as my first time seeing it was at night.Magical with the mists hovering over it.The bus 92 and 93 should get you there.Enough time to still take a long walk all the way to see the Palace of Fine Arts if you are up for it.

Bus is best and safest way around at night otherwise take an Uber for a round trip! It’s a must even though you don’t have much time. Enjoy.

I’ve biked the bridge multiple times, however I will be back with friends who have not experienced this must do activity. However, we will be visiting in the heart of winter, the second week of February and I fear it will be so cold on the bridge that we will not be able to enjoy ourselves? Has anyone biked in the winter months? If so, how was it for amateur bikers? TIA

We did it 2 weeks ago (Fisherman's Wharf-Sausalito - up Marin Heights and back to the city). The key is layers of workout gear that you can swap around . There are some steep climbs in the vicinity of the bridge which keep you nice and warm!!!But you will need a couple of layers and warm jacket if you stop . It was cold but blue sky when we did it-specatcular!
