Notes

In the summer of 1966, an 18-year-old Laura Nyro auditioned for Milt Okun, one of the most respected music producers of the day, and Artie Mogull, a noted A&R man. After the session, these eventual music business legends, were so blown away that Mogull became her manager, and Okun signed on to produce her debut record, More Than Just A Discovery. Go Find The Moon: The Audition Tape puts the listener in the room at the very beginning of Nyro's legendary career. It was natural. It was organic. It was pure Laura Nyro. Available now, for the first time, it includes "And When I Die," as well as songs she never officially released, and versions of classics, delivered with Nyro's deft and distinctive touch. The release has been produced with the full cooperation of the Laura Nyro estate.

This first recording shows Laura fully formed. The performances are more characteristic than the immediately ensuing studio recordings. The unheard songs are even more true to form than those that came to being because of this audition. A warp on a heavy pressing though, and off-centre as well. Scarcely commanding long player status or price, being only half that length, but an important history nonetheless.

This CD was Laura Nyro's starting point; but it is hardly the place to start for anyone discovering this amazing revered artist. This is her audition tape, which fans have been curious about. The whole thing is less than 20 minutes and contains an early version of "And When I Die." The most embarrassing track is Track 6 after she sings "Luckie" where the producers prod her to try do some non-original pop song like "Stardust" or "Moon River," which in retrospect of her amazing career as a writer is like an art patron asking Vermeer if he has any copies of famous paintings by other artists. The set concludes with Laura's amazing voice boasting youthful vibrato on the classic "Lazy Susan." This set is solely for Laura's most dedicated fans.
