This is classic Lucado: well researched, Biblically based encouragement for believers who are struggling to step into the Promised Land that Jesus, through His death, has made available to everyone one of us.

What I particularly like about Lucado's work is its readability. You don't get bogged down in theology or complicated explanations, he uses real life examples to demonstrate words of Scripture and then provides thought-provoking questions to enable you to reflect on his words.

He starts with the results of research that reveal 90% of all believers don't believe they're living in their Promised Land, yes, they've been released from slavery but are still standing on the edge of the Red Sea waiting for it to miraculously part so they can cross. This book provides a manifesto for stepping out into the water and safely arriving on the other side.

In studying the book of Joshua, Lucado shares insights into how one can step into the Promised Land like the Israelites did under Joshua's leadership.

As with many of Lucado's books there are a bunch of additional resources that help consolidate the teachings from the book. There is a detailed chapter by chapter set of reflection questions and a video-based guide to memorising four key scriptures (which I'm quoting daily 6 weeks after reading the book). There is a DVD-based study-guide which can be purchased separately.

This is important practical teaching that will strengthen your faith and help equip you to take the next steps into your Promised Land. I highly recommend it.

It has been years since I read a Max Lucado book. Years ago, I must of read the majority of these. But over the last ten years, I am not sure I picked one up. But since I am preaching on Joshua and Judges this year, I thought that this book might give me a few ideas. The book is well written, and easy to read. It flows well. It is not a book of scholarly insights, or even deep insights. It is a book that wades near the surface, but with that said, there is still something to learn. Sometimes the insights are helpful in preaching Joshua, and of course, there are always good stories that can be used as illustrations. But other times, Max jumps from the Joshua text into a general themed lesson. One of the strengths of Max's books is that they are encouraging. You almost feel that Max has never had a negative thought in his life. This can be a strong blessing from the book. Sometimes people need to hear positive words spoken about them. Overall, I was left a little disappointed, not that the book is bad, rather I was looking for some deeper insight that might preach well. But on the other hand, I did learn a lot, and the author did a good job in highlighting practical themes in the book that can translate to the pulpit. For the amount of time that this book took to finish, it was a good read and helped in the preaching process.

The book of Joshua shows us that our best days are ahead. We need to lean on God, remember His goodness and promises, and step forward expecting a great future holding God’s hand.

This book shows a correlation between the Israelites and our lives as Christians. Each area represents a condition of life.

Egypt is where enslavement happens. We are kept under ball and chain. This season is our life before salvation.

Don't Fight Your Battles Alone

I should have read this sooner. I picked it up once, only to put it down, and later picked it up again and read the whole book through cover to cover (not in one sitting).

This book takes us through the book of Joshua, where the Israelites finally come into the Promised Land. It shows how God fought for them and will still fight for us in this day and age. It is called "Glory Days" because the Israelites have triumph over their enemies. It is a good book to read when we need something positive in our lives, something to cheer about, the way the Israelites did when the walls of Jericho fell down.

Max Lucado uses a good balance of scripture and examples (both Biblical and contemporary). If you have a challenge to overcome, this is the book for you. Maybe you will be like the Israelites and be in your "Glory Days."

Another amazingly well written book by Max Lucado, i have long been a fan of his ministry and TV shows on TBN (Grace, You'll Get Through This, Traveling Light, Unshakable Hope), and his books are equally inspiring and empowering. As I write this review I'm going through a difficult time in my life, I've been made redundant due to the coronavirus pandemic and I'm stressed and panicking as I'm struggling to find a new job, i just wanted someone to say to me "i know you're going through a rough time right now but I promise you everything will work itself out." I looked through my book collection and found Glory Days, it focuses on the biblical story of Joshua and the Israelites and the challenges they faced after Moses' death, but Max Lucado tells the narrative in such a clear way, interspersed with bible study, scripture and testimonies to remind us all that if God can bring the Israelites through decades of tribulations, then God can do the same for us. If like me you are facing difficulties in your life, remember your Glory Days are still ahead of you, trust in the promises of God. I definitely recommend this book for anyone seeking positivity and wanting assurance that no matter what you're going through, there is always a bright future ahead.
