- GlennA946Whitehaven, UK256 contributionsI have heard so many good reviews of The Riverside Museum that I decided to go up to Glasgow to see what it's like. Firstly, the museum is free, which is good if you are visiting as a family and secondly, it's easy to get to, being next to the Clydeside Expressway with a large car park and about 7 minutes walk from Partick station.
I really enjoyed my visit and loved seeing the old cars on the wall, reminiscing about cars my parents owned like a Mark 1 Capri and a Rover P6, and seeing some pre World War 1 cars that have been lovingly restored and forgotten cars like the Renault 8. Also there is a former Strathclyde Police Ford Granada on display that brings back eighties memories for me.
Not just car enthusiasts, but fans of trams, trolley buses and trains will love the Riverside Museum and there is a mock up of an old Subway station and train with a video of actors playing passengers from the 1940s. I also loved sitting in the cab of a modern Transpennine train and playing at being a train driver( I really need to grow up lol).
Other features I enjoyed were Main St, which is a recreation of a Glasgow street from the early 20th century with a very convincing recreation of a spit and sawdust Glasgow pub, a pawnbrokers and a horse saddler's workshop, again made better with videos of people imitating Glaswegians from over 100 years ago.
I think this must be the most interesting museum I've ever visited as apart from transport and Glasgow history, it has a mock up of a Glasgow record shop with a history of some of the city's most popular musicians, a model railway shop with old train sets and an exhibition of prams, which were made in Glasgow for a time in the last century. They took their time to explain and to answer any questions. The displays were excellent and really supported the tour experience. We will never forget the story of the drunken angels!
And, of course, we loved the whisky!
Lovely, well stocked shop at the end with more delightful staff.

Thought this would be a good idea for a 60th birthday gift and it definitely was.
A great way to end a Saturday in the city with Fenna and Callum giving us the history and taste of Temnent's lager, beers, plus a few superb gins and malts.
Great hosts. Thoroughly recommend.

If you wanted more in-depth insight there were frequent free tours available. - Miss BEdinburgh, UK11 contributionsWe visited on weds 10th April, travelled and stayed in glasgow to have a whole day at the centre. Family of 4 with kids aged 8 & 14.
This was our third visit to the centre and we enjoyed it very much. The exhibitions and interactive activities kept the whole family entertained. We took in a planetarium show too which we all enjoyed. All staff we encountered were friendly and knowledgeable. We were there from 10-5 and could have stayed longer.
Unfortunately our visit coincided with a very wet day during school holidays. From around 12 the place felt too busy. Very noisy and chaotic, and difficult to have a turn on the interactive displays. Felt that the centre should have a lower max capacity as it just got too busy throughout. The cafes struggled to cope with demand, with lots of items selling out and the environments looking dirty. Centre quietened down around 4.
Overall it was a good visit but could have been much better. Lots of great interactive, child friendly additions within the exhibits allowing better understanding and engagement. Great use of new digital touch screens also. Stunning building with tall glass Windows allowing plenty of light. I was impressed too with the gift shop. Unlike many other museum shops, I felt that the gifts available for purchase at the Burrell actually related to the exhibits, which was great.
There are 2 cafe areas and toilets next to both. There is a lift if needed. Parking was the only negative.
