Primal Scream – Give Out But Don't Give Up

Sounds phenomenal. Wonder if this uses the same plates as the UK one? Don’t hesitate getting a copy.

Considering this is the follow up to one of the most important albums in musical history (no overstatement if you were around at the time) there is little said about this album and what is is mostly rubbish, yes in my opinion obviously
I consider myself a Primal Scream fan having followed them from …well Gillespie’s The Jesus and Mary Chain days and if you take Screamadelica away what you have is a band or really Bobby Gillespie who wears his Musical influences very close to his heart.
I think we all know by now that Gillespie is a music obsessive and predominantly 60’s and 70’s at that.
It runs through from the very first Byrds influenced debut album to today with a lot of musical baggage on top.
Primal Scream were just an average rock band until the E’s and Remixers came on board and changed them overnight and became a success and a ball and chain at the same time. Much in the same way as The Stone Roses and The Happy Monday’s neither of which got over it.
So taking Screamadelica out of the history and the fan base that came with it what you really have is a far better produced extension of what came before (more money and access to big name producers)
So as a fan from that point of view I think it’s actually a very good album and has some of their very best songs onboard from the obviously Stones influenced Rocks and Cry Myself Blind to what is one of their and anyone else’s best tunes Free with the amazing vocal talents of Denise Johnson.
They then went on to produce four very different but fantastic albums on the trot which the loved up brigade didn’t like either. Echo Dek, Vanishing Point, Exterminator and Evil Heat.
Unfortunately you might say it’s been a struggle since with some patchy albums but always with some great tunes in the mix bar Riot City Blues which really is a stinker…all influence and no substance.
Of course we got the real version of Give Out as well which is just another way of listening to what is a good old fashioned rock n roll album.
Don’t get me wrong Screamadelica is an incredible record but it was a hiccup.

Some Japanese record stores gave you a free collectors card box to store all five of the re-issues. Custom card box 'Sony Music Japan International Inc. Not For Sale'. HMV definitely stocked it but not sure how you redeemed the box.

The Run Out Groove 3lp version of this will make your ears absolutely happy. Super quiet pressing of the delightful Ardent studio sound!!!!
Original US studio version plus demos and outtakes.The way it flows sounds like a 70's Stones record. Near perfect.

A ridiculously underrated LP, - worth it for the ballads, as per their second album. If they'd made better use of Bobby's original vocal on "Free", released the George Clinton tracks on a supplementary standalone EP, and shuffled the remaining songs around a bit it'd be a classic.
