This 1972 collection set the bar it took years for Raitt to clear again. Moving easily between sensitive singer-songwriter and bawdy blues-mama roles, the blazing redhead proved she was a talent to watch on several fronts. Raitt demonstrated a keen instinct for finding suitable material, adopting Jackson Browne's "Under the Falling Sky" and Eric Kaz's "Love Has No Pride" as if she'd penned them herself. The honeyed vocals and slashing slide guitar heard on Give It Up identified Raitt instantly to anyone who encountered this album. 5 Star Soulful Blues In A Glitzy Wrapping!

To discerning ears and for someone well familiar with (and having owned each record upon their release, beginning with the first ) the entire Bonnie Raitt catalog I was disappointed by this recording. For a re- mastered recording it certainly has the clarity of sound that the original muddied sounding album didn't have ( true of the first two, especially her debut ) . I can tell some tech wizard really wanted to do this album justice and that is commendable,really. It was just that I was expecting so much more.....Digital Re- mastering is out if it's infancy now and yet there all still those studio wizards out there who ( it must feel like God to sit behind that console and redo something already done in an attempt to improve the sound quality in a particular older recording) are more obsessed with that, to these ears anyway, than in preserving the ambiance and initial feel of the music of the original. It reminds me of the old controversy about whether a great musician(s) is/are doing what they do out a love for music or because they are child prodigies, say ,that can play every note in minute detail that Jimi Hendrix, for instance,did. Does that make them ""Great"? Just because a cd is a Super Re- Mastered 24 Bit copy doesn't mean it has the same spirit or tone or feel that the original 24 Carat Original does. Believe me! In some cases, especially the really old stuff, say ,pre-1959 ,there is room for improvement, BUT not when it alters the sound so dramatically that it also changes the inherent spirit of the music. In other words, if it ain't broke, why fix it?" To own a lifeless digital copy of a recording when the actual soul has been sucked out of it in the name of " improvement" because the technology exists to do so, doesn't make it any better in all cases. This being one of those cases,unfortunately.

Bonnie Raitt became a huge popular success quite a few years into her illustrious career. That being the case, it is easy to lose sight of the her earlier recordings. Give It Up is an early tour-de-force of eclecticism on which Raitt's resonator, 6- and 12-string acoustic, and (less frequent) electric guitar playing plays a role on every track, and on which Raitt's singing voice moves easily from the introspective singer-songwriter style to classic blues, R&B, and soul. Raitt does not so much imitate various styles as she seems to become a 1920s blues singer, become a soul singer, and so on. Her backing musicians play flawlessly throughout and the arrangements faithfully recreate a virtual compendium of American roots music styles from the 1920s to the 1970s. An album that's every bit as vital today as it was nearly 40 years ago, Give It Up is a must purchase!

Bonnie Raitt has had a career of critical success, but poor album sales. I swear part of her problem is the God awful album art. "Give It Up" proves the rule.

Forget about the album cover. The music is contemporary and full of blues. Great song selection, music and singing.

This is a solid album - "Four Stars". (In my opinion there are only a handful of albums rating "five stars")

The first two songs are perhaps the best lead in to an album I've ever heard. Full of heart and soul with a New Orleans twist (just enough). Love Has No Pride closes the album with as much heart as it started. Highly recommended for a first time Bonnie Raitt buyer.
