Giovani Lo Celso joined us in August, 2019, from Real Betis, arriving initially on loan before completing a permanent transfer in January, 2020.
In August, 2022, he returned to Villarreal on loan for the 2022/23 season, where he made 29 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice.
The attacking midfielder began his career with Rosario Central and his performances during his time in the Argentine Primera Division and Copa Libertadores saw him earn a move to Europe with Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2016.
After initially being loaned back to Rosario, he returned to PSG at the start of 2017 and went on to make a total of 54 appearances, scoring six times for the Ligue 1 side, as well as being part of the squads that won the league championship in 2018, two Coupe de France titles and the 2018 Coupe de la Ligue before joining Real Betis on loan for the duration of the 2018/19 campaign. Giovani impressed in Spain during that season, scoring 16 times in 45 appearances in all competitions before his loan was made into a permanent transfer.
Gio marked his first start for the Club with a goal in our 4-0 Champions League group win at Crvena Zvezda in November, 2019. His influence grew as the season progressed and he went on to make 37 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice, his second in our FA Cup replay win against Middlesbrough.
The attacking midfielder endured a frustrating 2020/21 campaign interrupted by injuries, restricting him to 28 appearances in our 58 in all competitions. He made 18 appearances in the Premier League, starting 11. However, he did score his first Premier League goal and a memorable one to secure victory against Manchester City in November, 2020.
Giovani made 19 appearances for us in all competitions in 2021/22 before departing for Villarreal on loan in January. He played 22 times for El Submarí Groguet, and played his part as they reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, where they were beaten by Liverpool.
Now capped 39 times by Argentina, Gio was part of the La Albiceleste squad that ended a 28-year wait for a major title by lifting the Copa America in Brazil in the summer of 2021. Unfortunately, he missed out on Argentina's World Cup win in 2022 due to injury.
