Personal Life
Gilbert Trejo had substance issues, addicted to heroin. With the help of his father Danny Trejo, he was able to get sober, thanks to 12-step groups. “This program not only let me know where to take my kids; it surrounded me with a support system that was able to help keep my kids from using,” Danny said in an interview with Men’s Health. “The support group saved their lives.”
Danny Trejo has shared on social media that his son Gilbert Trejo has become “8 years clean and sober”. He wrote on Twitter: My son Gilbert Trejo has 8 years clean and sober today! Danny Trejo himself has been able to overcome his drug addictions and has been sober for more than 50 years. He spent some time behind bars. “When I think about drugs … I think about having to shower with 50 men in prison,” he says. “I don’t want to do that anymore. I don’t want somebody saying, ‘Hey, bend over and spread ’em.’ That’s what drugs mean to me.”
