Product Description

The high fidelity Omnidirectional microphone capsule is in a factory assembled housing with a durable, removable alligator clip with a black finish. - This mic is designed specifically for use with the “mic input” jack that provides "plug-in power" having voltage output from between 1.5 to 10 volts. The cable is 6 feet long. Please NOTE the following for recorder compatibility. These mics and all others like it are not compatible with mixers and most cameras, smartphones and recorders that do not have "plug in power." The phantom power from mixers will fry the mic elements. The max voltage is 10 volts. Do not use XLR or 1/4 input jacks whatsoever as they provide phantom power that is more than 10 volts and will damage the mics. Also most cameras and smart phones are not compatible because they are not made for good quality audio.

It tool me many tries and years to finally get what I wanted out of this mic. Does it record to a dlsr camera yes, (caution) "the mic need a little power for it to work, so for example if you plug it into a mixer with no phantom power it will not work. As the instructions say, don't hook up to mixer with phantom power it will destroy your mic." With that said, it's a hit or miss when it would work well, or not. I would prefer if the 3.5mm connection was just straight now the L shape. When connecting to a camera, because of it body shape you don't always get a good clean connection thus maybe only left channel picked up, or very buzzy sound. When it connects good yes its great, but if the connect wiggles just a little all hope fir your audio is gone. However the saving grace is to buy the Rode VXLR PRO. it has a built It Transformer. Meaning, with the Rode VXLR PRO you can use phantom power from a mixer to power the mic and it won't blow it up. Finally I can use a lave mic with my mixer or portable audio interface on the go anywhere with the giant squid, the audio from it is insane!

I’m using the microphone with the Synco TS UHF system due to the Scynco stock mics being atrocious for sound. I had just finished two interviews using a Sony lavalier mic and much to my disappointment was only better than the Synco mics due to being able to EQ out the flaws which was impossible with the Syncos. The last interview was mine. I was on a time crunch because of work and on my way home I got notification that the Giant Squid was delivered. Already on the low key frustrated side I figured it’s been a crap show anyway why not test the Giant Squid and fix it as well if I have another issue. TO MY SURPRISE! There was very little to zero clips in the audio after a faster set up than all the other previous mics. I have the biggest voice of everyone doing the interviews so I was very concerned with how my audio would sound. If I would have EQ’d the audio picked up by this mic, it would have been to degrade the sound to match the Sony, but I wouldn’t have been able to degrade it to match the Syncos without bringing the levels all the way up passed clipping. I have since ordered two more Giant Squids and will keep a surplus to prevent not having one if something happens on set to the currently used Squids. This mic is amazing and pics up everything that is needed with the Synco TS UHF wireless set up. I can’t wait to EQ up instead of to degrade in the next videos next week.

I stumbled across a video comparison and test/review of the Giant Squid alongside several of the big named mics - The reviews were almost suspiciously too 'good' when it came to this one (since when does an audio reviewer not have at least one problem with a mic? We are a tough crowd to please) - Intrigued, I did more research and decided to snag one up. My only mistake was not snagging more - This mic smokes the big guys - For the price, it would be a plus if it's audio only matched the $$$ ones - Even better, it exceeds it in terms of audio quality. I used it with a Zoom H4N and it's 'stock' audio didn't even need to be touched in post - Other than sync and a trim I had no reason other than OCD / Force of habit to tinker with it in post - Pretty impressive for $45 - It also worked great as a last minute alternative/back up to a NTG-2 failure boom set up - Audio guy had a bad day and showed up with a DOA Shotgun - I improvised and hung this squid (actually dangled it) above the ceiling over a table with 2 actors - I figured it might grab enough audio to be salvaged with the on board track - Even dangling almost 4 feet above the actors it sounded like both were wired up. Crystal clear and although naturally a tad lower, it still did a great job. Pros and props!

    The Only Con:
Wind screen isn't all that snug - But I always have a few extra in the gear bag so not a big deal. This mic is now ALWAYS in the mobile arsenal.

This is a very nice lavalier mic that to my ear at least, delivers the quality of some of the mics costing 3 or 4 times as much. I have a couple of Sony lavaliers that are also very good, but this one seems to be built very well, and delivers the quality I want. Plus, I like the fact that the owner of the company managed to get this going from his garage or whatever....love success stories like that! I use this as an interview mic with my DSLR and camcorder, and it works very well for that purpose. I have used it plugged directly into my camcorder, as well as plugged into my Zoom portable recorder, and it works great either way. Remember that your device will need to supply plug-in power to drive the Squid. So, highly recommended, especially for the price!

Just got & tested it today. Recording it threw my Zoom h1 , and Sony ICD-PX312 recorders. I noticed right away this mic was hot enough that I didn't have to turn my input level past 50% on my Zoom h1 and it recorded noiselessly and with a nice bassier sound same as my Rode VideoMic & I like that. I only had a RadioShack Lav mic that takes a button cell battery & is a pain in the Ax*$ trying to record with, because I would just get threw recording something and notice I hadn't flipped the switch on the RadioShack POS. Recording with that POS , I would get low sound levels. Having to turn it up in post, or having to set my Zoom h1 input levels up to 75% or higher to hear the recording & then hear the room noise levels because I had to turn the input level so high.
I was pleasantly suprized how well my recording was threw the Giant Squid in to the Sony ICD-PX 312 . Nice bassy sound just as with the Zoom h1. I thought my Sony recorder was a POS until today. If I would have purchased this Giant Squid before. I wouldn't have shelled out that $100 for the Zoom h1. Though the Sony only records in MP3...This Giant Squid makes recording much more acceptable .
The build quality is high, and recording quality is high as well . It does not require a battery, just plug in and record. Also, something you don't see very often is MADE IN U.S.A., in PA. Thus the five star rating. Before you blame your recorder for poor quality. I suggest you try this lavalier microphone. It may just save you $100.
