Giannina Facio is an actress and producer who originally hails from Costa Rica. She is most remembered for playing the role of Russell Crowe’s wife in the famous movie ‘Gladiator’. She kick-started her career in the mid-1980s and acted in a number of Italian productions along with American and Spanish movies and television series. Over the period of next three decades, she starred in a number of movies, with a majority of them being directed by her husband Ridley Scott. The two first worked in 1996 movie ‘White Squall’ and ever since then, Giannina Facio has featured in, with a few exceptions, all movies directed by him. Apart from acting, she is also a producer who has produced films like ‘Concussion’ and ‘Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House’ along with Ridley Scott. Their next production together is the film ‘Gucci’ starring Lady Gaga

Giannina Facio started her career in the mid-1980s working in a Spanish movie ‘Poppers’ and appearing in an episode of the American crime drama TV series, ‘Miami Vice’. The early 1990s saw her working in movies/TV movies (Italian and English) like ‘Nel giardino delle rose’, ‘Vacanze di Natale '90’, ‘I tre moschettieri’ (The Three Musketeers), ‘L'odissea’, ‘Nessuno mi crede’, ‘Extralarge: Cannonball’ and ‘Torta di mele ’.
In the latter half of the decade, she appeared in few more Italian, Spanish and English movie like ‘Il cielo è sempre più blu’ and ‘No se puede tener todo’; however, her most significant work was in the 1996 American feature film directed by her future husband, Ridley Scott. The movie, ‘White Squall’ marked the beginning of a long association between Ridley Scott and Giannina Facio. Since then, barring a few films, she has played minor or cameo roles in all of his movies. The following year again saw her featuring in a Ridley Scott directed film, ‘G.I. Jane’. Towards the end of the decade and the century, she worked in an episode of British/Canadian television horror anthology TV series ‘The Hunger’. One of the co-producers of the series was Scott Free Productions, co-owned by Ridley Scott and his brother Tony.
With the advent of the 21st century, she landed the most famous role of her career. The movie was Ridley Scott directed ‘Gladiator’ which went on to win numerous awards at the 73rd Academy Awards, the 54th British Academy Film Awards and the 58th Golden Globe Awards. She played the role of the Spanish wife of Maximus Meridius, a character portrayed by famous actor, Russell Crowe. The movie was a resounding success and though Facio had a small role to play, she still managed to grab attention and earn appreciation for her performance. She teamed up with Russell Crowe once again in the 2008 movie ‘Body of Lies’.
In between the two movies, she appeared in a wide variety of movies like a psychological horror film ‘Hannibal’, a war film ‘Black Hawk Down’, a romantic comedy ‘A Good Year’, a black comedy crime movie ‘Matchstick Men’ and a historical drama ‘Kingdom of Heaven’. In the last decade, she featured in quite a few more movies like ‘Robin Hood’, an epic historical drama; ‘Prometheus’, a sci-fi movie; ‘The Counselor’, a crime thriller and ‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’ an epic Biblical film. Her last release was in 2017 ‘All the Money in the World’.
All the movies she acted in post Gladiator were directed by Ridley Scott; however, she collaborated with him also as a producer. As a producer, her film projects included the ‘Matchstick Men’ (2003), ‘Tristan & Isolde’ (2006), ‘Concussion’ (2015) and ‘Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House’ (2017).
The couple is next producing a film ‘Gucci’ which is about the Gucci family murder and will perhaps release in 2021. It stars Lady Gaga in the lead role and is based on the Sara Gay Forden’s book ‘The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed’.

Born on September 10, 1955 in San Jose, Costa Rica, Giannina Facio is the daughter of Ana Franco Calzia and Gonzalo Facio Segreda. Her father, who expired in 2018, was a well-known Costa Rican lawyer, politician, and diplomat who spent a number of years in Guatemala.
She married Ridley Scott in 2015 and is his third wife.
