Rutter was born in the French town of Plescop in April 2002 and spent his youth career at his local club of Vannes before his undeniable talent attracted the eyes of Stade Rennes who secured the Frenchman's signature in 2017, with Rutter being just 15 years old.

He progressed very well at the club and made his senior debut in Ligue 1 just three years later in September 2020. He then made his UEFA Champions League debut a couple of months after and capped this off with a goal, netting against Sevilla.

His fine form for Rennes led to major interest from Hoffenheim, which they followed up with a swift bid on the deadline day of January 2021. Since then, the striker has gone from strength to strength, notching 11 goals and 4 assists over his two seasons with the club.
