Actor George Tobias, 74, Starred in Broadway Hit - The Washington Post

Character actor George Tobias, 74, who appeared as a nice tough guy and a leading man's pal in plays, films and television, died of cancer Wednesday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center of Los Angeles.

His most recent appearances had been as the nosy neighbor in the "Bewitched" television series.

Mr. Tobias was born in New York City. His first stage appearance was at the age of 15 in "The Mob." Perhaps his best stage role was that of Boris Kolenkhov, the Russian ballet master, in the long-running Broadway comedy, "You Can't Take It with You."

Later he appeared on stage in such plays as "Stalag 17" and with Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne in "Elizabeth the Queen."

Mr Tobias made his screen debut in 1939 with Ann Southern in "Maisie." Other well-known films in which he appeared included "Sergeant York," "Yankee Doodle Dandy," "This Is the Army," "Sinbad the Sailor," "Rawhide," "The Glenn Miller Story" and the "Glass Bottom boat."

He also appeared in the television series, "Adventures in Paradise" and "Hudson Bay."

Mr. Tobias lived in the San Fernando Valley.

He is survived by a brother, Benjamin, of New York.
