Gavin Bazunu admits he has a “long road” to recovery from a season-ending injury that will see the Dubliner sidelined for club and country until 2025.

The former Shamrock Rovers man suffered an achilles injury in the warm-up before Southampton’s game against Preston last week and then had surgery, which club boss Russell Martin said would keep him out for up to 10 months.

"It's obviously a massive disappointment to myself, my family and those people around me. I think the focus has to change now on me getting back to fitness. It's a long road to recovery,” Bazunu said, speaking to the club’s in-house TV channel.

"I just have to be positive and look towards that, and all I can do now is to support the players, staff and fans. I am looking forward to a really exciting and strong end to the season. Thank you for all the messages of support. I am going to be supporting the team throughout the whole end of the season and I hope it goes well.”
