Celtic announce another favourite to return for Borussia Dortmund charity match

Celtic fans will have an extra opportunity to descend upon Parkhead this season once the season run-in has come to its conclusion.

With the Scottish Premiership calendar ending on May 17th/18th, Brendan Rodgers will hope his side can progress to the Scottish Cup final a week later by defeating Aberdeen this weekend, which is on May 25th, to be exact.

The following day, a selection of Celtic legends take on Borussia Dortmund in a charity match at Parkhead organised by the Celtic FC Foundation, with some household names set to participate in front of a healthy crowd.

Paul Lambert and Tom Boyd are in the home dugout against the European giants. Scott Brown has been given the armband, and he will play alongside Joe Ledley, Charlie Mulgrew, Gary Hooper and Emilio Izaguirre among others, with more stars set to be announced in the coming weeks.

Most importantly, funds raised from the occasion will go towards food provision in several locations around the UK and Ireland. Dundee Cancer Centre at Ninewells Hospital is also a point of donation.

Tickets are widely available on the official club website, setting the scene for an afternoon of entertainment with charitable causes at its heart, a pillar of Celtic’s existence.

Former Celtic striker Jan Venegoor of Hesselink is fondly remembered in these parts and played an important part in two Scottish Premiership titles, one Scottish Cup and one League Cup triumph during his three years in Glasgow.

Now, the Bhoys have announced the 45-year-old’s involvement against Borussia Dortmund, where he will don green and white for the first time in 15 years.

Speaking ahead of the chance to reconnect with his time at Parkhead, Venegoor of Hesselink couldn’t hide his excitement as he stated [Celtic FC]: “For me, it’s just a privilege to be part of the game.

“I was at Celtic Park recently and thought about the fact that I had played there on the pitch for three years. Now I’m just a supporter which is great, so now for me to play the game on May 26th is just an honour.

“The game’s going to be fantastic, and hopefully, a lot of people will come, and, for me, it’s just a piece of my life that’s there, and it will never leave me.

“It gives me great satisfaction to play in the game, to be back in Glasgow, to see the people again – and there are still a lot of people who work at the club who I know really well – so, for me, it’s also a little bit like coming home.”
