It was my first visit in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. I felt in love with this place and surrounding places eg.Zugspitze ( highest mountain in Germany)We visited at the end of the winter But still it was just beautiful .
you can reach Garmisch-Partenkirchen and around everywhere by your private car or public transportation. I highly recommend this place for Perfect holiday.

Wanting to hike, but hopefully still experience and see some snow, October was a wonderful time to visit, as many of the trails are still open and the high peaks were snow-covered. Beautiful area.

All I can say is bring a proper camera with enough memory there are world class views everywhere you turn.
One of the best places to truly appreciate the landscape and the beauty of the Alps. I have been to many places, but this place will always stick out to me as one of the most unbelievable. During the winter it has a certain feel to it. This is authentic Bavaria. The only thing I regret i not staying longer.

This ticket cost 62 euros and included the Zugspitz and Alpspitz. The Zugspitz consists of travelling by train from Garmisch, cog railway from Eibsee and then cable car, returning either the same way or coming back via the Eibsee cable car and then the train back to Garmisch. The Alpspitz consists of the train from Garmisch and the cable car up to the Alpspitz and then you can either come back via the same cable car or come back via the Kreuzspitz cable car. Once you have done your two mountains if you take your tickets back to the ticket office you are given a 2 euro refund per ticket. We though they were excellent value, but make sure the mountains are clear of mist. They don't need to be used on the same day.

The town is beautiful but not the people living here. We met the most unfriendly and rude german people here. I am embarrassed to admit that I am german myself who moved to the US 35 years ago. Never in my life have I had the misfortune to run into this many unwelcoming, uninviting and inhospitable bunch of german people.

We traveled to the town planning to do Zugspitze but reading the reviews of the long cog railway ride and how boring that is, we decided it was a beautiful day-let's rent bikes and ride around. we stored our bags in the lockers at the Garmisch -Partenkirchen hauptbahnhof for three euros in a big locker that stored both 40 liter back packs. the bike center rents bikes (mtn bikes and more but we did cruisers) and that place is straight up the road toward partenkirchen. They were so nice. costed us 24 euros for two cruisers. Grab a map at the info center inn garmisch...that is at the top of the walking place...there are bike trails everywhere but the one along the river is beautiful...and take it to the stadium and ski jump and then go left and ride further to an awesome swimming place- kainzenbad! beautiful natural pool! total highlight! we loved it.

The Garmisch Classic covers both up and down lifts to 2033M using 3 chairlifts and only a 30 minute downhill walk if that's what you want, we missed out the middle lift and walked for about 90 minutes on good but slippy paths.
The highlight has to be the cantilever observation platforms quite scary
Like the rest of Bavaria once they get you up the mountain they don't double the prices on food and drink like many world attractions, good food and drink is available in 3 cafe
Well worth the trip
1.5 euro discount for over 60's wow

It is a quaint wonderland of a town. Took the train and beautiful, snow, cattle and the little houses for animals and hay. Seeing the Zugspite was beautiful and in the snow made it even more real. Went to top and sat and had hot coffee and stood outside at the highest spot and snow flurries everywhere. The ride up and down was very tight as you could almost touch the mountain if glass wasnt there. Want to go back and take friends. I lived in germany when my husband was in army in late 1960s. Was a treat to see those memories again. (my visit was in 2009)

Our seventeen year old granddaughter planned our stay in Munich during our two week tour of Europe from Prague to Paris for our family of six. She discovered the Garmish Partenkirchen area through Trip Advisor so we planned to journey there from Munich early one morning in July 2014. We arrived at Garmish and discovered the Garmish Classic summer experience that allows you to purchase a ticket to use the ski gondolas to access the mountains to hike. The six of us went up by Alpspitz and were lucky it was clear and we had wonderful views. The younger members of our group, our son, daughter-in-law, and two granddaughters hiked from Alpspitz down to Hausberg while my husband and I, in our 70s, took the cable car there. There is a nice restaurant at Hausberg where we sat and drank coffee while waiting for the hikers to arrive - it took them a little more than one hour. We all ate some delicious spaetzle with cheese and then hiked together down to Kreuzeck where we boarded the final cable car back to the base station. We have such beautiful photos and memories of that day, one of the highlights of our trip.

There is a good hiking route and it only take you half a day. Depart in the morning and go to the cable car station. Take the cable car, enjoy the view and you will arrive to to hiking path. Follow the path and you will arrive to a small village with a great local restaurant! Have your lunch with local food and local hospitality before you continue your journey back. Going back is downhill in a forest where another splendid scenery await you. And you will arrive back at afternoon.

Hello. We are planning to travel by car from Munich to Garmisch for a ski day trip in Garmisch Classic. Are there any car parking possibilities near the ski rental office? Is it better to leave the car near the main train station and then travel by bus? Thanks! Great comments & reviews here!

There is ample free parking at the bottom of the lift very close to the rental shop. Take the car!

Hello Ireland ... Although I have not skied in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in years, we go often during cold weather so I can help you out a bit with your question. Firstly, yes, take your backpack with extra socks and such things with you to the ski lift which will take you up the mountain.
As for dining, there are many types of restaurants from Burger King, McDonalds, to locally owned small restaurants that are not expensive. But, yes, eating out can get costly. There is a restaurant that is reasonable for breakfast, lunch and/or dinner, Cafe Kneitinger There is a web site for it but I was not allowed to put it on here for you. Google it and you will find it easily. Very good food and not far from the ski area.

Hello Melbourne. I do not know of a chalet to rent, but I do know a great hotel in Grainau just a wee bit outside of Garmisch. It is the Hotel Post. They do have a web page and have great rooms, a fabulous breakfast and lots of trails for walking in the mountains.
