Disc 1 has things like "Sugaree", "They Love Each Other", "Catfish John", and "Moonlight". Disc2 features tunes like "How Sweet It Is", "Friend of the Devil", "Russian Lullabye", "Tore Up Over You", "I'll Take A Melody" and other tunes. Disc 3 has good stuff like "After Midnight", "Stir It Up", "Mystery Train", "The Way You Do...", and "Mighty High" (which has an unknown date/place of recording). Yes, we've all heard a number of these songs before, but similar to the Dead, each version is a little bit different. Garcia lets out some long, spiraling, sparkling solos ("After Midnight" is a good example) and Godchaux's piano is a perfect fit for the music. His wife's vocals are far from the screeching we've heard on other releases--sounding as laid back as I've ever heard her sing.
This is another nice set of tunes played by perhaps Garcia's best band outside the Dead. Listening to these songs you can hear the fun and interplay the band felt on stage across these three shows. This is a nice look at three shows that we'll never hear as complete shows. But that's okay--what's here is pretty nice.
Another good week for music releases with this 3 CD set and the 2 CD set from Gov't Mule of blues based tunes. A lot to digest.
After the Dead took much of 1975 off, Jerry Garcia continued playing music every single day, and you can hear it in every note he plays on this set. He was so gifted that he could literally play any genre of music, and still put his unmistakable mark on it.
There are so many of these folks who are no longer with us, and each one left behind their own musical legacy, and you can now add this set to their other achievements. Steve Parish writes the wonderful liner notes, and shares his memories of Jerry and the band.
This is definitely one of the best additions to the growing number of volumes in this series, and should not be missed. Anyone familiar with the JGB should definitely grab this one, it’s one for the ages.
