Today, our guests visit 20 rooms on a self-guided tour that depicts the home life of a powerful Texas family. The Moodys established one of the great American financial empires. Based on cotton, it grew to include banking, ranching, insurance and hotels. The mansion is one of the finest places to visit, a trip back in time. A cool shopping, delicious dining, perfect people watching area of the island! You can easily stroll down the sidewalks and soak in the historic architecture that reminded us of the French quarter! These old buildings are homes to the best shopping on the island! Unique gifts, clothing, home decor, whatever you can think of, it can be bought on the Strand. The rail trolley to get around was also useful and very charming, reminded me of San Francisco a bit

Bishop’s palace was a wonderful place to visit. We love looking at old historic homes, and this is one of the best. It’s a great place to spend a few hours.

The house was an easy walking tour. We enjoyed the audio tour of each room on the phone. The greeter was great. We spent about an hour there. Neat to see/hear about the history.

Visiting the Houston Texas area with refineries everywhere, we wanted to learn more about the oil industry. Overall, we enjoyed a visit to Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig.
Pros: Museum is a small, 3 story drilling platform anchored in Galveston port, close to the cruise terminal. The museum only charges a small fee and staff was very friendly. Visitors can easily get a basic understanding about the history and mechanics of oil drilling in about an hour. Actual equipment is displayed, and there is an introductory movie. From the gangway leading up to the museum and the outside areas, visitors have a beautiful view of the passing sightseeing and fishing boats and a large number of pelicans sitting on the nearby rocks. When we visited, there was plenty of cheap street parking closeby.
Cons: There is a large amount of reading throughout the museum, and it could be tedious. If I went back, I would probably spend the extra money for the audio guide. The air conditioning is really loud. Why do I care? When the air came on, it became really difficult to hear the video clips playing throughout the museum unless you are standing super close. The museum feels a little dated and in my opinion, the large gallery of famous Texas oil men and innovators was somewhat strange to me. Naturally, the display puts a very positive spin on the environmental impact of drilling.
Overall, I would be recommend for anyone with an interest in science.

I thoroughly enjoyed my harbor tour on the Seagull II. The Caspar in and the tour guide were very knowledgeable about the harbor and shared lots of information about dolphins, Galveston, the history of the harbor, and all of the floating vessels we encountered.
    Great tour.

We did the rainforest and aquarium. Both were neat and different. The top of the rainforest is very hot and humid! You could spend about an hour in each taking your time.

Dropped by to take a look at the view. The first level is pay to fish, but the 2nd level has a bar, with seating looking out to the ocean. We didn't fish, but one of the workers shared some pictures of recently caught fish and a couple of sharks.

This is a unique museum, as it has both an actual submarine, and a destroyer escort. Both have been adapted somewhat to allow for touring through them, but still retain all of the original atmosphere of when they were carrying out their missions. Most every area of both vessels are open, and touring through gives you a good view into life onboard for officers and crew. I never thought I would stand on the deck of an actual destroyer, or walk through a submarine, but now I’ve done both. As well, there is a good display that is mostly reading and photography telling the stories of the essential parts that women had in WW II. Very enlightening.

Overall there is a lot of history and it would take many days to appreciate all the detail. A little disappointing that the orphanage portion was almost an afterthought.
