The pile-up of effects is like watching someone else playing videogames

With the second of Hasbro's summer blockbusters, that all-American patriot GI Joe arrives to smash Transformers out of sight. Director Stephen Sommers (The Mummy) bashes out action sequences with the kind of comic-book clunkiness you might find endearing or mindlessly puerile.

GI Joe is now a conglomerate of elite international specialists: the Joes, as they're called, whose number include a masked ninja and cockney tough-guy, are delivering weapons safely to the UN. Christopher Eccleston is the baddie, a Scottish double-dealing weapons manufacturer whose voice-activated missile launchers respond only to Gaelic.
