      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Though arguably superior to its predecessor, G.I. Joe: Retaliation is overwhelmed by its nonstop action and too nonsensical and vapid to leave a lasting impression.

Ajazz S It is the best Dwayne Johnson as well as fast and furious 6&7&8 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/18/24 Full Review Derek L If Rise of the Cobra wasn't already bad enough, Retaliation is almost equally bad with an uninteresting, dull and boring take that consists of a load of plot holes. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/14/24 Full Review Audience Member Taking place after the events of the first movie director John M. Chu helms the second live action adaptation of the popular 1980s Hasbro toy franchise based on the cartoon series with Stephen Sommers producing The Joes managed to stop the terrorist organization Cobra from destroying the world from the nanobots programmed to eat everything in sight But unbeknownst to everyone Cobra was able to use the nanites to change infiltrator Zartan's physical appearance and pose at the President of the United States More characters from the property make their debut from Roadblock to Lady Jaye to Flint to Firefly to Jinx to General Colton to returning ones such as Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, Zartan, and Cobra Commander New actors include Dwayne Johnson, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Stevenson, and Bruce Willis With this movie their ultimate retaliation results from the fake President issuing a kill order terminating the G.I .Joes with extreme prejudice labeling them as traitors staging an insurrection Only a few members remain and they'll need help to bring down Cobra from operating all governmental operations Nuclear disarmament is on the rise There's no sophistication in the writing, it feels like scenes are cut, plus there's questions asked that never get answered Thankfully the action sequences are still fun to watch particularly the rivalry of Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow, there's even a flashback scene revealing the deep rooted hatred But it would be nice if this didn't feel like an empty experience plus the score is very lackluster The script is lacking development too with not a lot of character work Still for fans it actually feels closer to the source material even if it's highly forgettable Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/29/24 Full Review Orion B To be honest, I don't actually know why people hate this movie I think it's very enjoyable Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/23/24 Full Review Jay F Nowhere near as good as the first movie. And terribly disappointed Channing Tatum didn't want to stick around for more. I liked his character in the first one. Characters were weak in this storyline, but enjoyed Bruce Willis being the character they based the G.I. Joe group off of. Seems fitting. Good action. Wesley Morris Grantland Did you think a second G.I. Joe movie was a good idea? Jan 3, 2014 Full Review Louis Black Austin Chronicle As to be expected, Johnson actually imbues his character with some humanity, but in the cacophony that is this movie, this doesn't really amount to much. Rated: 1.5/5 Apr 5, 2013 Full Review Leonard Maltin leonardmaltin.com There's a decent attempt to humanize the characters and make them more than mere fighting machines...but there are also potholes in the logic of the screenplay, by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Apr 2, 2013 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy The film ricochets between interesting characters and idiotic ones, between clever plot developments and ludicrous ones, between smart dialogue and -- wait, scratch that; there is no smart dialogue, just marble-mouthed monologues and limp quips.
