      G.I. Joe: Retaliation Reviews

The film ricochets between interesting characters and idiotic ones, between clever plot developments and ludicrous ones, between smart dialogue and -- wait, scratch that; there is no smart dialogue, just marble-mouthed monologues and limp quips.

If I’m going to be watching a cartoon, I prefer it to be animated.

Is it as awful as I anticipated? Nope, not even close. Is at a good movie? I don’t think I can go there either.

While The Rise of Cobra was directed by Stephen Sommers (The Mummy), Retaliation was helmed by Jon M. Chu (In the Heights) and the difference in styles is apparent.

Comic-booky in the best of ways (heavy on the fun, low on the portentous drama), G.I. Joe: Retaliation is a top-level modestly satisfying blockbuster.

Less preposterous than its predecessor, but also less fun.

This is no masterpiece, but it's not trying to be.

Out comes the ammo. Stuff explodes. More ammo. Baddies die. The End. We hope.

Big, dumb, loud, and completely forgettable, "GI Joe: Retaliation" is a lot like running around outside, throwing your favorite toys in the air, pretending to be an army man.

It's a serviceable action movie, full of well-choreographed fight scenes. It's just pretty empty when it comes to the characterizations and plot.

Even if you love guns, it's hard to see merit in a picture that's all ammo and no aim.

By embracing its cheesiness, this sequel to the dreadful 2009 film actually works. Sure, it's mindless fluff, but it proves to be a lot more fun than it should be.

One of the rare occasions where a sequel is better than the original, the G.I. Joe cycle will never appeal to critics, but at least G.I. Joe: Retaliation never tries to.

Still, overstuffing these brutish box office egos into this pandering, disjointed disaster area was not enough to sweeten the pot for this pointless piece of percolating piffle.

Now that's more like it. G.I. Joe: Retaliation is the Joe movie I've been hoping to see since I was a little kid

The film can be fun in pieces and is a much closer adaptation of the source, but it just doesn't have the guts to go completely [expletive] insane.

Long on incoherent destruction and short on logic and a compelling structure on which to plaster its 3D mayhem.

This storyline certainly has an interesting peace-through-strength/Manchurian candidate subtext, but it's lost when the film veers off to a mystical Himalayan ninja temple and is not only completely confusing, but also abominably acted.

Should you see G.I. Joe: Retaliation? Yes. If you like G.I. Joe.

      Full Review | Mar 5, 2018

Any hint of amusement or wit is quickly glossed over in favour of action sequences, clunky dialogue and forgettable 3-D.
