You have to divide this CD into two different periods. The first 12 songs are from 1944-46, when Kyser only recorded sporadically. The quality of the music was so good, that the flip sides of the Hits on the previous Collector's Choice 2 CD set are included on this disc. But 1947 was a quite a different story. Kyser went on a rampage in the recording studios, recording a whopping 53+ tunes, which are way too many to fit on this disc. The reason why so many songs were recorded may not have been obvious to the public at the time. The Musicians Union was planning another Strike commencing on Jan. 1, 1948, so no union members could make any records until matters were settled. The major record companies suffered great losses during the first Musicians Strike of 1942-44, so this time they were better prepared for what lied ahead. Bandleaders like Harry James, Benny Goodman, and Kay Kyser, tried to squeeze as many songs on shellac as they could before the strike deadline. Because they tried to record whatever tunes were out there, they made some of their Best, as well as their Worst, recordings. Kyser was fortunate enough to score two biggies like Woody Woodpecker and Slow Boat to China during this period, although both songs were not released until 1948. Sorry to say that the more lively "Fun Tunes" are absent from this CD: Love on a Greyhound Bus, Possum Song, Boi-n-ng, As Long As I Live, Big Brass Band From Brazil, Taking Miss Mary to the Ball, Bride and Groom Polka, Too Much a Manana, and The Headless Horseman. They would have made the music more interesting instead of so many ballads as noted by a previous reviewer. Maybe they will be included on the next issue, if any?
