The prose is a little dated (at least in the volumes I have) and if you are convinced that gender stereotypes (girls playing with dolls and boys playing baseball...gasp!) will scar your child then look elsewhere, but you will not find a better way to build reading confidence at an early age and reinforce basic phonics than the Dick and Jane series. For adults, the repetition "Come Dick. Come Jane. Come and Go. Go. Go. Go." can be tedious, but rote memorization coupled with basic phonics and word recognition is the simplest, least stressful way to introduce your child to reading.

I learned to read on these back in the very early 70's and decided that if they were good enough to get me reading 1-2 grades above my own throughout my primary education, they were good enough for my kids. My 7 year old started with these at age 5 and very quickly mastered simple words he used every day like "go" and "play". He was proud when I told him he had read his first sentence..who cares if it was only two words long? He also liked the fact that the stories were so short (typically just a few sentences or a couple of VERY short paragraphs)..he was reading a real "chapter book" just like the big kids!

Now my 5 year old has started where her brother (now reading solidly at the 2nd grade level) left off and has already gone through all her brother's books, working on her phonics and word recognition skills. She was VERY excited to hear that I ordered more Dick and Jane books just for her...that alone tells me all I need to know about the value and enduring appeal of these simple, yet effective teaching tools.

Timeless Learning Tools That Work

Have purchased a series of the Dick and Jane stories for my daughter. She recently turned 5 and although she had memorized other children's books upon hearing me read them, it was apparent she was not reading the words. With the Dick and Jane stories, she does the initial reading and, surprising to me, loves the stories as simple as they are. In a week she has progressed through 3 of the Stage 1 booklets and is now reading compound words and "sounding out" new words. She commented that the illustrations are beautiful. Each night she chooses Dick and Jane over the other options that she has. These are the same stories I learned to read from 5 decades ago. Seems good learning tools are timeless.
No worries about stereotyping from the stories...she chose the princess costumes before she had a clue as to the differences, likes Mikey from the Ninja Turtles and likes to help assemble/build things and use my tools. I don't see these stories changing that.

I ordered a couple of Dick and Jane books out of nostalgia. I grew up learning to read in elementary school with these books. They were the best then, and are still the best. The vocabulary increases with the age level of the books. The lessons in the books are of quality for any child, then or now. These books have an innocent, honest writing style that will never go out of style. Highly recommended for new readers.

I was a precocious reader in childhood, so the Dick & Jane series we were compelled to read in grade school were beneath me. But being an obedient goody goody, I slogged thru them with my classmates & had difficulty understanding how some of my peers could be having trouble with the readings. (I am far less a snob now than I was as a child.) Fortunately, we had Dr.Seus in our home library and a weekly visit to the public library to keep me challenged. 50 years later, I'm having a great time rereading this book out loud again but this time using extreme drama for the awful dialogue

Loved the fact that the illustrations were the same as in the book I learned to read from, back in 1950, The text is just as boring as it was then, but a great little beginning reader nonetheless. Bought for my Grandson who has started sounding out words and can't begin kindergarten until September because he's too young. He should be able to sail through this and "Go, Go, Go" (Read with Dick and Jane).

Having read Dick and Jane books in elementary school, I remembered the quality of the lessons and the subtle and gradual adding of more and more vocabulary for First and Second graders. But, unfortunately, the Dick and Jane books were published in 1946, and newer books have taken their place. I looked at some of the newer books, and they didn't rise to level of the original, A very pro-active customer service agent located a copy for me after I had searched without success. It's perfect! No flash, no dazzle, no robots or cell phones. Just everyday people in everyday situations with a picture of the activity on every page so the student can read the words and see the action. My hardcover copy is old and very worn (by many little hands), but it's still the best on the market.
