Frenkie de Jong and Joan Laporta 'made pact' that may open door to Man Utd move after all

MANCHESTER UNITED were in hot pursuit of Frenkie de Jong during the summer transfer window.

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has reportedly made a pact with club president Joan Laporta to discuss a salary adjustment before the end of the year. A summer of friction around the Dutchman's pay almost saw him sign for Manchester United and if more talks fail to see the parties arrive at a compromise, Erik ten Hag could get what he wants after all.

Ten Hag made De Jong his top Man Utd target shortly after taking the job this year. The pair had previously worked together at Ajax which, it was thought, would help to bring about a reunion but the player made it clear that he wanted to stay at Barcelona.

Despite that, United and Barcelona agreed on a £72million fee that stood for weeks while the Red Devils attempted to make progress on personal terms. De Jong was left frustrated as Barca publicly stated their desire for him to stay, but only if he took a significant pay cut.

The Dutchman's camp weren't impressed and his relationship with fans was put to the test as some gathered to hurl abuse outside the training ground and demand that he sign renewed terms.

De Jong finally got his wish and transfer deadline day came and went without heading to Old Trafford, but SER journalist Adria Soldevila claim that he agreed with Laporta to discuss a 'salary adjustment' before the end of the calendar year. Based on how that went over the summer, significant compromise would be needed on both sides to avoid further strain.

United may therefore be wise to keep tabs on the situation amid rumours that they remain keen on De Jong, despite changing course late in the summer. Indeed, the Red Devils turned to Barca's bitter rivals and splurged to bring in midfield general Casemiro from Real Madrid.

Ten Hag reportedly spent more than United's anticipated summer transfer budget which is set to land him with less money to slash in January. The club could make an exception if landing the manager's top target is at stake, however, particularly in light of the positive signs seen on the pitch in recent weeks.

Two dismal defeats to Brighton and Brentford kicked off Ten Hag's tenure but he has followed that up with four successive wins in the Premier League, including surprise results against Liverpool and Arsenal. The 52-year-old could bank even more credit by beating Manchester City, with a trip to the Etihad pencilled in just after the international break.

Man Utd legend Roy Keane is among those to heap praise on Ten Hag, saying earlier this month: "If you remember what the manager did after the [Brentford loss], and we talk about sports science... He brought them in the next day and ran them.

"Sometimes you have to put a marker down and go 'listen, if you want to play for Man United, whatever your qualities are, you have to run'. They didn't run at Brentford. He made huge decisions, but getting them in and going 'if you want to play for Man United you need to run', I think doing that is a good marker to put down."
