If Michael Penn sometimes can't seem to decide which of his musical talents (singer-songwriter, musician-arranger, perspective-minded producer) to focus on, it's a dilemma that's produced a compelling slice-of-résumé here. And though his pop sensibility is sometimes reminiscent of Matthew Sweet and other history-conscious peers, there's a reserve to Penn's productions that subtly underscores lyrics as sharp of tongue as they are of eye. Typically bleak, if playfully so ("I got loaded in a hearse when all I needed was a nurse," he observes on "Lucky One"), the singer can't help but lay the truth on you even while he's busy concocting just the right musical cocktail to help wash it down. This is Penn's sometimes bleak world-view, be it personal or objective, set to dry productions that can still somehow recall Spector one instant, mournful Delta blues the next, crucially without being slave to either. Cheer up, Penn seems to be advising here, the news may be bad, but the music doesn't have to be. -Jerry McCulley

Since then I've played the heck out of it. It's a rare album that really doesn't have a dud on it. Each of the tracks has a great feel to it.
My next impression of this album is how nice it is that this album really reflects his wife's melodic sensibilities. I doubt he did it on purpose, but many of the things that I love about these tracks are the same things I love about Aimee Mann's songs: great melodies, great lyrics, and always something unexpected.
Last week I had my laptop with me helping a friend set up a large corporate presentation. She needed to make sure that all of the presenters could use the A/V equipment whether they had a PC or Mac. She asked me to help test the setup on my Windows laptop. I plugged in my machine and they asked me to play something to test the audio, so I just hit Play on the first track that was open on my Amazon Cloud Player. It blasted Lucky One and everyone in the room loved it. They asked me to send them the file so they could use that as the track to kick off the event. (As an aside, I told them with their budget they could buy their own copy.)
Anyway, these are great songs and they have held up nicely to the test of time.
MP4 is more comparable to the relatively challenging "psychedelic folk" of Free-for-All, which followed the relatively straightforward pop of March--just as this release follows the accessible Resigned. But the melodies still stick in your head--"Lucky One" and "High Time" are destined to become classics; although nothing stands out like "All That That Implies" or "Bedlam Boys," there's plenty of "Free Time" and "Strange Season" to admire. Still catchy and addictive and ingenious and intelligent.
Why can't we hear stuff like this on the radio? Maybe this album will get enough recognition to bring March and Free-for-All back in print, so everyone can appreciate the full spectrum of Penn's genius. As it is, this is a worthy addition to his canon, and I can't wait for the next one!
RESIGNED is his only album still in print (when did THAT happen?) -- if you're looking for a good starter MP album, go with it instead of MP4.
not every listener must agree with me.
Sometimes the urge of publishing is much stronger than the songs.
I think this new album is a masterpiece! As always with Michael Penn albums, this one took me three or four listens before I "got it," and then I found I couldn't get the songs out of my head for days on end.
Penn's forte is his uncanny ability to capture hauntingly personal moods or ideas (almost always to do with relationships but expressed in grand and mysterious literary terms) and wrap them up for delivery in superbly well-crafted but never-overdone pop songs. It's a real trick to make songs with this level of production and yet never end up with anything blandly soulless, distant or plasticky.
Michael Penn's albums aren't for everyone, but for some of us they are just exactly right. These are NOT manufactured for mass-market appeal, which is a disadvantage business-wise, but I for one hope that the loyal fan base provides sufficient return that he will continue to create these gems for us.
