What travelers are saying
- DavidBaltimore, MD64 contributionsMust see the film to get a good orientation. There are some nice artifacts and displays. The area is well marked. Not like Gettysburg where you have monuments every 100ft. Rangers were helpful but could do a better job with the history of the battle.Written October 11, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - NinastevenDowningtown, PA21 contributionsJust fascinating and so professionally performed. The young woman who gave the presentation on the herbal remedies had been an intern here in the past. She was excellent, as was the young man who explained leeches and surgical procedures. Both used humor to lighten some pretty disturbing medical treatments. Don’t miss this tour!Written December 9, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- ChuckLz14Columbia, MD96 contributionsIt's a nice little museum filled with a good amount of knowledge of the History of Fredericksburg & it's taverns. Very inexpensive and the guides are very friendly.Written January 9, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Been There Done ThatDanville, VA246 contributionsGorgeous view! Very interesting. Short interesting movie. We didn’t get to spend a lot of time here because of traveling. Would like to go back when we have more time. The ginkgo tree was gorgeous and huge. Handicapped parking on side near house with a handicap entrance. Very small gift shop. Nice attendant. Easy to get to and free parking. Can spend as little or as much time as you like. Gorgeous grounds to sit and enjoy. Would probably take about an hour to read everything.Written November 25, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ChuckLz14Columbia, MD96 contributionsIt's a sad part of our History but this small museum and preserved battlefield with graves for US Soldiers only does it Justice. A must stop in Fredericksburg.Written January 9, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- jpete02Lansing, MI877 contributionsGuide was very friendly and informative and knew her stuff about Mary Washington. Was a little disappointed because the house that Mary Washington lived in looks nothing like its current state.
George Washington bought this house for his mother after she got too old to live at Ferry Farm (across the river from Fredericksburg).
The house has been enlarged substantially since Mary Washington lived here, does not have the same floor plan, and the exterior is not painted the same color as it was during Mary’s residence.
Nevertheless, worth a stop if you are in Fredericksburg and you can buy a combo ticket to see this house, Charles Washington’s house/rising sun tavern and the Mercer apothecary for $24/adult. All of the sites are within walking distance of each other.Written November 10, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Be sure to include a tasting. It's free as well. Our guide was great. Friendly and very knowledgeable about the process.
We bought several bottles at the end. Worth a tripWritten July 8, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It doesn’t look like much on the outside but there’s so much there, particularly original artifacts from the Monroe presidency, lovely portraits, and jewelry from First Lady Elizabeth Monroe! Please don’t judge a book by its cover, this is definitely worth a visit!Written April 5, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - DavidBaltimore, MD64 contributionsExcellent property with a deep history. The tour was simply outstanding. We learned about the Lewis/Washington family and how this house survived the Civil War.Written October 13, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jpsgirl70 contributionsWe enjoying walking around and looking through all the local shops….so much that we returned the next day to browse some more and stayed for their annual Christmas parade. People are friendly, so many cool shops & antique shops. The pharmacy/diner was closed due to remodel, so we will have to visit again.Written December 5, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Kate Illinois1Illinois4,722 contributionsThe final resting place for more than 15,000 Union soldiers with only 2,473 identified. The unknown markers are the smaller square stones; the top number indicates the plot number and the bottom number is how many bodies are buried in that plot. Located atop Marye’s Heights with two entrances. Battlefield visitor's center has a small parking lot and restrooms.Written June 28, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
