Antonio Conte will replace ‘fantastic’ Tottenham player when injured star is back

Antonio Conte has told Thursday’s press conference – as per Football London – that while Tottenham goalkeeper Fraser Forster has been “fantastic”, he will be replaced when Hugo Lloris is back from injury – with captain Lloris still sidelined.

Forster, 34, has played 10 games in a row for Spurs since Lloris’ injury – since the Frenchman picked up an injury. He has conceded 12 goals in his 12 games, keeping five clean sheets. Lloris is in line to return after the international break.

Indeed, Forster produced some excellent saves last time out and while he might be blamed for Joe Worrall’s header in the 3-1 win over Forest – he saved a penalty from Andre Ayew. He also made a couple of excellent saves beforehand.

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s outing against Southampton on the South Coast, Conte praised Forster for his form since replacing Lloris between the sticks. But, when Lloris is fit again after injury, Conte says the Frenchman will start.

“Fraser is playing very well. A reliable player. A fantastic signing. He deserves credit. Won’t force the situation because he Fraser deserves credit. We are really happy with Fraser but when Hugo is ready he is our first choice,” Conte said.

It is perhaps slightly harsh on Forster. The England international has been superb between the sticks, with Alasdair Gold even suggesting he has arguably been Tottenham’s best signing of 2022-23. But, Lloris does remain first choice.

That is despite some questionable displays from Lloris over the past few weeks, prior to his injury. It might be that Lloris is in the final few weeks of his Spurs career. He might remain, but Tottenham will be looking to sign a goalkeeper.
