Gareth v A risky first up movie to make, but Ross does a decent job of it without hitting any high notes. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/22/23 Full Review John O Spoilers: Shannon and Imogen are true acting gems. This is so layered and psychologically textured. It is less about revenge or wrath or unpredictability. But more about possession. Frank has it made in the shade in his chosen profession, and doesn't he know it. A chef who learned in Paris and leaves those who eat his food singing his praises, literally eating out of his hand. He is driving the car, and leaves little or no expression to their praise. Leaves the impression: If you're lucky, I'll cook for you again. So the control is his. His personal life is different but the same. Once he meets Lola, of whom he is gaga from the get-go, she seems to want to drive the car too, or even go in a different direction than Michael. Can't she be loyal, can't she do what I want her to, and what about some other guy in a hotel room, is she loyal to me, as jealousy springs up? He possesses the foodies, but struggles to possess her. And her, sheese, some really dark stuff in her background, being raped then falling in love with the rapist. At least we see her mom, Rosanna Arquette, who shows little interest in Lola at a dinner with Frank and the two of them, so we get a little feel how she ended up like this. As for Frank, why is he so hard-bitten, wary, and looking for explanations and holes in loyalty? Anyway, they exchange I love yous, yet wonder who the hell each other really are and are they both being honest and dealing in good faith. If they want to love, do they even know what love is? At the end, she walks away, but wants to see exactly how Michael reacts to it, hiding, so he can't see her at the moment of truth. So need, want, truthfulness, and covering up for baggage are all in the mix here. When Michael took it out violently on her rapist/lover, was he just acting out "on her," not him, after elaborately traveling and finding a way to get close to that bad guy? Frank wants what he wants, when he can't have it, her, look out. And she is elusive and nontransparent, so he is always wondering what she does when they're apart, though she is upbeat, funny and compliant while they're together. She may have departed because he wanted too much from her, too much of her, and she was feeling both claustrophobic and threatened. Can love plus freedom really exist on a planet populated by humans? Economy of length in this movie, conciseness of scenes, and our aching sadness for both of them, as they may not love now because they got none before. Bravo, well done, so well cast and acted, well written. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member I was so pleased to see this movie, primarily because Michael Shannon stars in it. He brings a quietly anxious quality to everything I've seen him in (Midnight Special, Loving, Take Shelter). I think he's one of the most underrated actors around. In this film he is debonaire, street smart, and dashing. Highly recommend. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member He's a talented chef. She's a struggling designer. He's got anger issues. She's got a sketchy past. Trying to be a little sexier than it is, their issues collide head on and bravo you have the conflict. The resolution...just wait for it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member A traumatic love story that isn't quite thrilling enough for the genre it lives in. But the two leads share such an authentic, passionate connection that it makes all the deception that goes down all that more tragic. Alexandra Heller-Nicholas The Blue Lenses Ross's film is succinct and confident, and the film's force in large part stems from its no-nonsense approach. Aug 25, 2018 Full Review Kristen Lopez Spectrum Culture A muddled descent into psycho-sexual mind games that never fully gels. Rated: 2.5/5 Nov 20, 2017 Full Review Rex Reed Observer As an exercise in voyeurism, this is a movie that sleeps on its feet. Shannon is too good for this nonsense, and Poots has got to do something about that disastrous name. Rated: 1/4 Dec 14, 2016 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Although the film ultimately doesn't satisfy as either a thriller or a relationship drama, it's an interesting exploration of gender roles. Rated: 3/5 Oct 3, 2019 Full Review Phil Guie Film-Forward.com At only 88 minutes, this is a fine example of economic storytelling. Rated: 3/5 Mar 21, 2019 Full Review Sean Mulvihill FanboyNation.com Even when Frank & Lola stumbles, the film is still quite watchable because of its two great leads.
