An Aristocratic Country House in the U.K. Hits the Market for $15.8 Million

Dubbed The Mount, the 47-acre estate in Shropshire formerly belonged to the 6th Baron of Harlech.

A massive manor house in the U.K. countryside, built on an estate once owned by Francis Ormsby-Gore, the late 6th Baron of Harlech, is up for grabs.

Set on a sprawling 47 acres in Shropshire, The Mount has hit the market for a cool £12.5 million (or about $15.8 million). Originally part of the Ormsby-Gore family’s vast Brogyntyn Estate, the home that stood on the property belonged to Lord Harlech before he was ultimately forced to sell the ancestral property in 2001 due to debt. Since then, Lord Harlech’s Edwardian-style house has been razed and replaced by its current owners with a Georgian mansion that seamlessly blends the old and the new. The now roughly 20-year-old residence and its grounds include a variety of modern luxuries, such as a helipad and an elevator.

“The Mount is a classically designed Georgian country house, built in a grand manner, using state-of-the-art technology, positioned to take advantage of the spectacular, far-reaching views,” said Savills agent Tony Morris-Eyton, who’s handling the sale. “A property with such depth of architectural integrity complemented by all the modern accessories so often required by today’s buyers is a rare proposition.”

The seven-bedroom, seven-bath spread was designed with the help of Shrewsbury-based conservation experts and architects Andrew Arrol and James Wade of Arrol and Partners. The resulting structure measures a commodious 31,000 square feet and incorporates walls made of hand-carved Derbyshire stone, underfloor heating, and double-glazed windows.

The Mount is discreetly tucked behind double gates and positioned at the top of a long driveway. The front door opens to the main reception hall, which is anchored by a dramatic cantilevered staircase. From here, the hall leads to a drawing room and a formal dining room, along with more casual spaces that include an open kitchen and family room area. Some of the estate’s more notable recreation and leisure perks include a private gym, an orangery, a snooker room, a 65-foot indoor swimming pool, and a tennis court. Just as much care and attention have been given to the grounds; surrounding the home are three picturesque walled gardens, including a vegetable garden, and three ponds.

“Great thought has been given to creating an elegant and grand country house which is fit for ultra-modern yet comfortable 21st century living,” notes the listing. “Every facet has been considered and created to the very highest standard.”
