World Cup: France beat Poland to reach quarter-finals - reaction

France have now progressed in all six of their World Cup last-16 ties. Actually it's 7/7 if you count 1938 when there were only 16 teams and a straight knockout.

Kylian Mbappe has now scored exactly 250 goals in 360 appearances for club and country.

That is 250 goals before he turns 24. Unbelievable.

Kylian Mbappe scored four goals at the last World Cup, only behind Harry Kane on six.

But he looks in a good place to win the Golden Boot this time.

It will probably almost be forgotten after another Kylian Mbappe masterclass but Olivier Giroud became France's all-time top scorer tonight with goal number 52.

Thierry Henry had held the record for over a decade.

Here is that Robert Lewandowski goal.

Only Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo (118) and Hungary's Ferenc Puskas (84) have netted as many international goals as Poland's Robert Lewandowski (78) for a European nation.

Lewandowski's goal took him above Pele's 77 to put him ninth in the all-time leading men's international goalscorers.

You get a sense that Kylian Mbappe is just toying with his opponent. He's that good, quick, explosive and knows he can just go past any of his opponents.

I just love being here watching players like this and seeing what they can do.

Only Just Fontaine - who netted a record 13 goals all in 1958 - has scored more World Cup goals for France than Kylian Mbappe's nine.

Thierry Henry is next on six goals.

With five goals and two assists, Kylian Mbappe has been directly involved in each of France's last seven goals at the World Cup.

Only 13 players have ever scored more World Cup goals than Kylian Mbappe's nine (in 11 games).

Six of those players are on 10 - so he's just one behind them.

Today Mbappe overtook Cristiano Ronaldo (eight goals in 20 games) and Diego Maradona (eight goals in 21 games).

Going into the game I had a strong feeling that Poland couldn't compete with France. They competed better than I thought they would but once Olivier Giroud got the opener, Poland had to change their game plan.

Eventually it came down to Kylian Mbappe and a couple of wonderfl finishes from him.

This was a strong performance from France. There are tougher tests to come but it was a display of French swagger and a statement that we are still the team to beat.

France need to put the level up collectively, individual performances were good - Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann, Olivier Giroud.

But they need to come together as a team.

France certainly look as if they are capable of retaining the World Cup this month.

They have been far from perfect - but no team have blown everyone away in Qatar.
