Salma Hayek and François-Henri Pinault’s Full Relationship Timeline

Salma Hayek and François-Henri Pinault are one of Hollywood’s biggest power couples to date.

The award-winning actor and the Kering CEO first started dating in 2006, before officially tying the knot in 2009. Since then, the two have become regular red-carpet fixtures at major film and fashion events—with their 16-year-old daughter, Valentina, even occasionally making a cameo.

“I married the right guy,” Hayek said during Harper’s Bazaar’s 150 Most Fashionable Women celebration in 2017, per People. “That is probably the most important thing. We support each other in everything we do. We want the other one to strive. Makes you happy when the other one strives.”

She added, “And you know what, we don’t have a very strong social life, because we really like to spend time together. So we do spend a lot of quality time together.”

On Instagram, the actor posts rare snaps from the couple’s wedding day to mark their anniversary, including a full look at her bridal gown.

May 1, 2023: They attend the Met Gala.

Hayek and Pinault make a dazzling display at the 2023 Met Gala, where the actor wows in a ruffled crimson ball gown by Gucci.

February 2021: Salma shuts down rumors that she married François for money.

The actor gets real about her romance with Pinault during a guest appearance on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast.

“When I married him, everybody said, ‘Oh, it’s arranged marriage, she married him for the money.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, whatever, bitch. Think what you want,’ ” she says. “Fifteen years together, and we are strong in love. And I don’t even get offended, I’m like, ‘Yeah, whatever.’ ”

She adds, “The thing is that in pictures you cannot begin to guess the magic in him. He’s made me become a much better person, and grow in such a good, healthy way.”

March 6, 2019: Salma calls François “the best husband in the world.”

In an interview with Town & Country, Hayek gushes over her marriage to Pinault, calling the fashion businessman “the best husband in the world.” She adds, “I get to be who I am with him, and I don’t feel that somebody tries to limit me.”

When it comes to the origins of their love story, Hayek is more coy. “I’m not going to tell you,” she says. “It’s such a romantic, amazing story, but it is mine. I don’t want to vulgarize it by making it into a story to make myself interesting.”

August 2018: They renew their vows.

Hayek shares photos from a surprise vow renewal ceremony the couple undertook during a tropical vacation.

“The summer is coming to an end and my best moment was when my husband surprised me with a vow renewal,” the actor writes in the caption. “It was not what I would have chosen to wear to my wedding but I was told I was going to the spa!”

January 28, 2017: Salma jokes that they don’t have a social life.

Talking to reporters at Harper’s Bazaar’s 150 Most Fashionable Women celebration in Hollywood, Hayek offers a glimpse into the inner workings of her relationship with Pinault, per People.

“I married the right guy,” she says. “That is probably the most important thing. We support each other in everything we do. We want the other one to strive. Makes you happy when the other one strives. And you know what, we don’t have a very strong social life, because we really like to spend time together. So we do spend a lot of quality time together.”

Of being honored as one of the most fashionable women in Hollywood, she adds, “I feel a very strong relief. … Because my husband is in the fashion business. I’m so happy I made it to the hundred and something. I think it’s going to make him proud.”

February 24, 2013: They attend the Oscars together for the first time.

Pinault accompanies Hayek to the 85th annual Academy Awards ceremony, marking the couple’s first-ever joint appearance at the Oscars.

April 11, 2012: Salma calls François “the best thing that ever happened” to her.

While speaking with Marie Claire, Hayek candidly gushes over her husband. “He’s the best thing that ever happened to me and my work,” she tells the outlet. “I was trying to figure out how to have a child on my own. I came to terms with saying, ‘[Love] might not happen, and I have to be okay with that.’ Then someone came along whom I never would have pictured or thought I would have wanted; he was completely out of my box. Even though I was not looking, I was present and I was open. I am the luckiest person I know.”

February 14, 2009: They get married.

The couple have a courthouse wedding on Valentine’s Day. In a 2023 interview with Glamour, Hayek reflects on the special day, revealing that the ceremony came as a surprise the day of.

“I didn’t even know I was getting married that day,” she tells the magazine. “It was like an intervention. … They just took me to the court. My parents, my brother, they were all ganging up on me. I had a phobia of the marriage thing. … The reason why it was a courthouse wedding was because they dragged me there.”

She further explains, “It was because I had said yes to the marriage, but I just wouldn’t actually show up on the day or do it. And then afterward I said, ‘Oh, it’s okay. I don’t feel any different.’ And then a little bit later I said, ‘Okay, this is kind of exciting.’ And he’s like, ‘Can we have a party now?’ ”

The two would later throw a larger wedding bash in April.

September 21, 2007: Salma gives birth to their daughter.

Valentina Paloma Pinault is born on September 21, with a rep confirming to news outlets, “Mother and child are doing well.”

In a 2015 interview with People, Hayek reflects, “I had my child so late in life. I thought I wasn’t going to be able to and it was such an important thing to me.”

March 2007: They announce their engagement—and that they have a baby on the way.

After about a year of dating, Hayek and Pinault announce that they are engaged—and pregnant! A rep confirms to People, “Businessman François-Henri Pinault and his fiancée, Salma Hayek, are happy to announce they are expecting the arrival of their first child.”

2006: They start dating.

The two reportedly first meet at a 2006 gala at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice, Italy. Shortly thereafter, they begin dating.
