For the Cool in You’s title track was released as the lead single for Babyface’s third solo album. The single peaked at #81 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #10 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The song was nominated in 1994 for a Grammy Award in the Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male category but Ray Charles won for his rendition of “A Song For You.”
In a 2023 interview with BET celebrating the 30th anniversary of For the Cool in You, Babyface talked about the inspiration for the title track:
That was written for the title track because I remember hearing the Digable Planets song ‘Cool Like That.’ I thought, ‘Oh, I need a cool song.’ That just made me go down that road, and I just needed to figure out how to, once again, create a persona of something cool. That just seemed to be the record that made the most sense.
The song was featured in a scene from the 1993 Family Matters episode “Dr. Urkel and Mr. Cool.”
