For Every Solution There's a Problem, a collection of off-cuts, out-takes and other tracks that have gone astray during the last 40 years of Lee Hazlewood's peripatetic career, is worth at least 10 "Best Of" compilations by most other songwriters. It won't lead to Hazlewood being suddenly showered in wealth and adulation by a world that has thus far neglected him, but it will save those in the know many hours of searching bootleg stalls and MP3 databases for items missing from their collections.

The 11 tracks here (there's an unlisted secret cut, "For My Birthday") are demos, recorded by Hazlewood and long-time sideman Al Casey, to be sent to other artists in the hope that they might be able to do for these songs what Nancy Sinatra did for Hazlewood's "These Boots Are Made For Walking" (Hazlewood's songs have also been covered by Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Gram Parsons, Elvis Presley, Einsturzende Neubaten and Billy Ray Cyrus, among many others). They lose nothing by being presented in this stripped-down form--the strengths of Hazlewood's songs were always their simple, insistent melodies and grimly hilarious lyrics, and it is no disrespect to the formidable artists (and Billy Ray Cyrus) who have covered Hazlewood's songs to state that no voice suited them better than his. --Andrew Mueller
