This is an outstanding set, with informative notes and excellent sound quality. However it has a few peculiarities that are worth noting.
First, let me say that I adore the Shirelles. I've had their records playing on my turntable and in my head since the 1960s. I have their LPs, and just a few 45s that contain non-album tracks, so it there was any difference between 45 and LP versions I wouldn't be aware of it.
Some of the surprises on this compilation are longer running times: a few seconds on "Don't Say Goodnight and Mean Goodbye" and about 10 seconds on "Sha La La." The difference is small, but significant. On "Nobody Baby After You" we're treated to a false start and some studio noise, which I think adds to the enjoyment of the recording by conveying a sense of how precarious and brilliant the Shirelles' achievement was, starting from scratch. This extended version is also on the CD "Lost and Found."
The recording of "Doomsday" given here is the same alternate take (not identified as such) that appeared on Kent LP 032, "Soulfully Yours." On the alternate Shirley's vocal sounds almost sarcastic and the word "doomsday" is more spoken than sung. The version that we've loved all these years, on Scepter Pricewise LP 4002, is all sweet innocence and sounds like Shirley means it. That's the one you want.
The biggest shock here is "Don't Let It Happen To Us" in a totally different, ragged take that features a vocal by one of the other girls, maybe Micki. The previously issued take with Shirley singing lead is a million times better.
I just wanted to point out these discrepancies for anyone who's interested. The right versions of "Doomsday" and "Don't Let It Happen To Us" are worth seeking out to supplement this set, which in every other respect is wonderful.
Now if somebody would only issue a box of the complete Shirelles!

(see my review under Shirelles: For Collectors Only) (Collectables). This 2 disk set is clearly the best collection currently available for die-hard Shirelles fans, such as myself. All their hits are here, except "I met him on a Sunday", apparently unavailable due to licensing problems. The box set contains every other Shirelles hit to crack the US Billboard charts. All tunes are presented in remastered stereo sound (unlike other collections of the Shirelles' works). Long sought after songs such as Blue Holiday, among others, are presented here. The set (from UK's Charly) gets 5 stars!!!

The Definitive Shirelles

Everything you ever wanted to hear again by the Shirelles and stuff that you did not know existed, such as their ads for Coke!
These are the original recordings, not by 'a group containing ome or more original members' and they still have that 1960s magic. A must for any fan of good 60s music and at a bargain price.
