Roderick "Roddy" St. James is the main protagonist of Flushed Away. He is Rita's boyfriend and Sid's best friend.

Personality[]
Roddy is a very posh, slightly arrogant and uptight rat in the beginning. He likes things orderly and clean, and seems very squeamish at the slightest hint of dirt and filth. While it is thrilled to have the house to himself while Tabitha and her family are off on holiday, he is shown to be very lonely, as his only friends are the dolls Tabitha owns. After being flushed in the sewers, more of his personality comes out as he appears to be bewildered by the city in the sewers, but almost relieved that he's among other rats for once. He isn't very street-smart like Rita, but starts to learn and become more confident as the film progresses. For most of the film he is very cowardly, but is shown to become brave and is a quick thinker, such as when he uses the dinosaur balloon to plug the sewer tunnel to get The Toad's hench-rats off his and Rita's tails.
Appearance[]
Roddy is a clean, pampered pet young adult rat whose wardrobe consists of what appear to be dolls clothes. His main outfit for the film is a black tuxedo with a white undershirt and clean black shoes. Once he arrives to Rita's family home, he is shown to not wear his black jacket and bow tie. He doesn't wear them for the remainder of the film. His shirt also seems to get noticeably dirty and his hair becomes messier. He also seems to have his sleeves more rolled up.
Trivia[]
- Rita and Roddy are the one of the only DreamWorks couples to not share a kiss in their movie. Only Roddy is the one to admit his feelings to her ("I was afraid you wouldn't like me"), and it's heavily implied they become a couple in the end, as he asks her "You wouldn't happen to need a first mate would you?"
- At some point during the movie, Roddy either lost or removed his jacket, and he keeps it off for the rest of the film.
- Roddy was originally supposed to have two hamster butlers as seen in early previews for the movie. They were going to assist Roddy in his activities around the house as he basks in having the house to himself, and accompany him to find Sid during the night. However, most likely to make Roddy more lonely and want to stay in the sewers more, the two were scrapped.
- Roddy is voice by Hugh Jackman, who also played Wolverine in the live action X-Men films. As a nod, Roddy was going through his wardrobe, the outfit he forgoes, for the Elvis Presley-style rhinestone jumpsuit, is a replica of the original Wolverine outfit from the Wolverine comics.
