Faber to publish Chris Mould's War of the Worlds graphic novel

By Faber Editor 28 March 2024

This autumn, Faber will publish Chris Mould’s graphic novel retelling of H.G. Wells’ classic, The War of the Worlds.

From the bestselling illustrator of The Iron Man and Animal Farm, Chris Mould’s War of the Worlds: A Graphic Novel brings the cult classic to a younger audience.

In this full-colour, graphic novel retelling, Chris Mould depicts the arrival of Wells’ giant Martians as they tower over woods and cities, ungainly at first and then horrifyingly efficient when they begin to attack. With new text interspersed throughout, this reimagined classic features Mould’s atmospheric and macabre illustrations.

Chris Mould has illustrated the gamut, from picture books and young fiction to theatre posters and satirical cartoons. As well as writing his own fiction and illustrating Ted Hughes’ The Iron Man to much critical success, he has teamed up with author Matt Haig for the bestselling A Boy Called Christmas, A Girl Who Saved Christmas, Father Christmas and Me and The Truth Pixie. He lives in Yorkshire with his wife, and has two grown-up daughters.

Chris’ work to rejuvenate Ted Hughes’ The Iron Man has seen him work closely with the National Literacy Trust, most recently on their launch of the Doncaster Literacy Lab and a wider project to transform Mexborough Business Centre into a self-sustaining art space, with a giant Iron Man mural, painted by Chris.

Chris Mould said:

‘I was only 9 years old when Jeff Wayne released the soundtrack for H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds. This was the spark that ignited my fascination with the original story, the screen adaptations, and the broader world of science fiction. I’m delighted to have developed such an excellent working relationship with Leah Thaxton and the Faber team, that I can now bring that fascination to life within my own version of this classic story. I’ve really enjoyed exploring the graphic novel format for this, using panelled and sequential artwork. At a time when we make ever closer studies of the reality of worlds beyond ours, I hope readers enjoy my vision for H.G. Wells’ everlasting fantastical classic.’

Leah Thaxton, Publisher said:

Fans of H.G. Wells, Shaun Tan and Neil Gaiman are in for a treat: Chris Mould has taken a story that has fascinated readers for decades and brought even greater immediacy to the diary format. And never have the monsters looked more relevant or terrifyingly beautiful. Chris is the graphic novel draughtsman of our age.

Leah Thaxton acquired world rights from Penny Holroyde at Holroyde Cartey. Chris Mould’s War of the Worlds: A Graphic Novel will publish in hardback on 10th October 2024.
