Product Description
It is the North West Frontier of India at the turn of the century. Captain Scott (Kenneth More) is sent by the British Governor to rescue a five-year-old Prince and his American Governess, Catherine Wyatt (Lauren Bacall), when a rebellion breaks out amongst the tribesmen. Scott is instructed to take the child to safety in Kalapur, which is 300 miles away, on the pretext that while he is alive, no rebellion can succeed. They are forced to travel on an old and fragile train, but it soon becomes clear that the danger from the train is the least of their worries. Someone on the train is trying to kill the Prince.

Excellent cinematography and likable characters (except for one) are just some of the positives. I especially liked Gupta, the railway man. He and his broken English provide some comic relief in the midst of the ominous situation. “It will be ready in a soon moment, sahib!” And for a film made in 1959, the special effects were very realistic. The scene where they are high up on the rail bridge looked more real than most modern cartoon CGI junk. No profanity or nudity and no needless gore. There are subtitles for the hard of hearing. I usually rate a movie by my willingness to want to watch it again. Well, with this one, I knew I'd want to watch it again before it was even over! What a “good little movie” as Lauren Bacall once referred to it.
The story is pretty basic. The British military must combat a rising tide of radical Islam in the badlands of Northern India, and smuggle a young Indian prince to more civilized and secure areas of the country via a single railway. And therein adventure ensues.
The actors do their own stunts, with even the little Indian boy who plays the prince sitting in the open air control area of the trains locomotive. Nearly everything here is shot on location, save for one sequence that required special effects. Hundreds if not thousands of extras, a couple of battle scenes, including one involving a chase, a good amount of introspection, and even psychological motivations.
There's no quick cutting raid paced editing here. It's all one shot scene, or mostly, coupled with good dialogue and respectable acting from seasoned veterans, you got yourself a pretty decent film. Politically it is somewhat staged to present a kind of one sided tale, but otherwise is fairly accurate.
A good adventure yarn. Give it a shot.
Anyone interested in old-fashioned adventure and in films "that they just don't make anymore", should check out this underrated and well-made picture.
