      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Flags of Our Fathers is both a fascinating look at heroism, both earned and manufactured, and a well-filmed salute to the men who fought at the battle of Iwo Jima.

Kyle M Clint Eastwood showed inspired masterful dedication onto his 2-parted craft, amid timely war stories at the time, with sole significance towards heroism and post-war realism’s humanizing reminder. Incredibly haunting, boldly as a tonal successor to “Saving Private Ryan” in the remarkably crafted, unflinchingly detailed atmosphere strengthened by performative convictions that not only spiritually connects but also honors their roles’ basis wills, even if the portrait isn’t in its entirety. (A-) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/20/24 Full Review Mark J The CGI is appallingly bad. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/19/24 Full Review Harrison R Pretty true-to-life, interesting, nothing too original here though Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/27/23 Full Review D R Watch and feel the story. It's a great movie. Watched it with someone who was there. They said it was right. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/09/23 Full Review Some Guy F Letters from Iwo Jima was so good that I had to watch the companion movie...but the companion movie was just a generic war flick. It's fine, but that's it, it's just fine. Certainly watchable, but if you come into it hoping for a second Letters from Iwo Jima you will be sorely disappointed. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/27/23 Full Review r 9 A nicely crafted war film. I wasn't overly invested in what was happening onscreen, but that doesn't take away from the fact that I still found 'Flags of Our Fathers' to be a very good and a very interesting story from the Battle of Iwo Jima. It's a fascinating tale that it tells, which is definitely its strongest feature. As a whole I was very interested in it, individually I don't think it's as strong but as a collective it comes out nicely. Ryan Phillippe, Jesse Bradford and Adam Beach are the pick of the performers, though there are a load of familiar faces elsewhere - including Paul Walker, John Slattery and Jamie Bell. Super intrigued to check out 'Letters from Iwo Jima', which Clint Eastwood & Co. released two months after this to serve as a companion piece. Hopefully that's as good as this. Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald It's a strong, intelligent film - and a deliberately unsatisfying one, since it possesses all the frustrating scrappiness of real life. Nov 11, 2023 Full Review Christopher Kelly Fort Worth Star-Telegram/DFW.com Eastwood has been more interested in breaking down myths and showing us the human cost of violence and conflict. Flags of Our Fathers soberly and intelligently continues that tradition. Rated: B+ Nov 11, 2023 Full Review Jim Schembri The Age (Australia) Flags of Our Fathers is much the same as the classic films it proudly echoes - that war is hell, and though some are worth fighting, doing so exacts a huge human cost that cannot be glorified with the mere waving of Old Glory. Nov 11, 2023 Full Review Jorge Cámara La Opinion Clint Eastwood has become a serious and excellent director that doesn't shy away from examining difficult and controversial themes with characters who confront complex moral dilemmas... This movie reaffirms his position [Full Review in Spanish] Nov 11, 2023 Full Review Rick Bentley Fresno Bee There is nothing wrong with having good intentions. It is just a shame when those intentions turn a naturally powerful story into a less-than heroic product. Nov 11, 2023 Full Review Rick Kisonak Seven Days (VT) Eastwood's landmark movie documents the waste and folly of what they [Bradley, Gagnon and Hayes] went through, from the battle campaign to the marketing campaign. All of it is a tragic story magnificently told. Nov 11, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews
