Their still close relationship has cased rumblings of a royal reconciliation for some time but could a reunion actually be on the cards for Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew?
The former spouses live together and Sarah has stuck by him throughout the Jeffrey Epstein scandal that has dogged his career and seen him stripped of royal titles.
Of course, Sarah is no stranger to front page revelations herself most famously perhaps after being 'caught out' in a newspaper sting trying to sell access to her former husband.
Despite their closeness, though, a reconciliation has seemed unlikely, in part down to Fergie's 'banishment' from the royal fold, with Prince Philip said to be particularly put off by her presence.
Now though, it looks like all obstacles have been removed almost 30 years on from their divorce. A source has indicated to the Daily Mail that King Charles would give Sarah and Andrew his blessing to marry again.
Technically, they don't need Charles to sign off on their union, with the line of succession passing through William's family but some have indicated that it is 'important' to Andrew to have his family's backing.
The Telegraph has even named the proposed venue for their 'nuptials,' the chapel of All Saints in Windsor, where their daughter Beatrice tied the knot in 2020.
For her part, Sarah has always maintained that it wasn't a lack of love that drove them apart but rather the loneliness of him being away from home with his naval commitments.
'My deal was that I was marrying my man, who happened to be a prince and a naval officer. But what I got was not the man, I got the palace and didn't get him... and the courtiers told me I had to go to Buckingham Palace and he had to go to sea.
'For our marriage, I saw him 40 days a year,' she said during an interview with Ernie Manouse in 2010.
Their actual divorce in 1996, which came four years after announcing their separation, was also not down to a breaking of their bond but rather because of the practicalities of royal life as it was.
'I didn't want a divorce but had to because of circumstance. I wanted to work; it's not right for a princess of the royal house to be commercial, so Andrew and I decided to make the divorce official so I could go off and get a job,' she told Harper's Bazaar.
Now with Sarah bravely battling skin cancer following a mastectomy, a royal reunion looks, from the outside at least, like a positive step forward for both and would certainly go a long way to rehabilitating Prince Andrew's reputation.
