After almost a year since the film’s announcement, Netflix has released the first look of The Family Affair. The romantic comedy has Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron and Joey King in the lead roles, in addition to the supporting cast of Liza Koshy, Kathy Bates and Shirley MacLaine. The film is directed by Richard LaGravenese, best known for P.S. I Love You and Beautiful Creatures, and written by Carrie Solomon. A Family Affair will be released on June 28, exclusively on Netflix.
The film was shot in Atlanta, USA from August to October 2022. It was initially set to release on November 17, 2023, but its release was postponed in the wake of the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes. A Family Affair is a love story between an older woman and a younger man. It has movie star Chris Cole (played by Zac Efron), falling in love with his assistant Zara’s (Joey King) mother (played by Nicole Kidman). In real life, Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron have a 20-year age gap.

The first look photos shared by Netflix show 56-year-old Nicole Kidman looking chic and fashionable with blonde hair and “quiet luxury” outfits in neutral colours. Joey King, of the Kissing Booth franchise fame, looks playful in her casual jeans and T-shirts. King’s hair is styled with her natural wavy texture that gives her a spirited appearance. Zac Efron looks every bit dapper as he plays a movie star. The stills show, Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron sharing knowing glances and wandering on empty streets as they hold hands. The photos also capture Joey King’s character’s discomfort and disapproval with her mother and boss’ romantic relationship.
Commenting on these “first look” photos, many people lauded the filmmakers for making a film that shows an older woman as a figure of desire. People also commented on whether Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron had on-screen chemistry based on the photos. This is not the first time that Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron are playing a couple. They also played lovers in 2012 thriller The Paperboy.
Interestingly, this is not the only film with the title A Family Affair which is set to release this summer. Director Warren Fischer has also made a comedy film, titled A Family Affair, starring Joe Wilkinson, Colin Hoult, Laura Aikman and Jane Asher. The movie will be released on Apple TV on May 20.
