The title seems ironoc now, but this is a GREAT album.

Having praised the unfairly-maligned Rough Diamonds album (the last by the classic Bad Co unit), I might be expected to in turn malign this one. But no, this is another corker, albeit for different reasons. The band had a lot to prove in '86 (even though Ralphs openly admitted at the time that using the same band name was a record company decision). Replacing Rodgers was a gamble, but Brian Howe was a good choice. More of a Hard Rock singer than Paul Rodgers, Howe's sound was pitched somewhere between Lou Gramm and Ashley Holt (Warhorse). So you had power and soul, but not much R & B. Anyway, the boy could sing, and was a useful songwriter. In the four years since RD, Mick Ralphs for one had gathered a lot of material, and one of his most hard-rocking gems starts the album, Burning Up. The riffs are heavy and well-timed, and the voice is pretty overwhelming. A few very un-Rodgers-like screams add to the ambience! This Love was an obvious single choice, and could've been a hit - Melodic AOR was still very popular at the time. And hey, Mick Jones, Mr Foreigner, produced this album in pleasing fashion; why wasn't this a hit? Answers on a used Lou Gramm solo album, please. Fame & Fortune itself is a slow, heavy piece of crunch; it's Ralphs' tale of the original line-up's textbook success story, with the inevitable, if anticlimactic, fall. That Girl is a pleasingly catchy rock song, with a suggestion of blues. Tell It Like It Is ROCKS, but more in a Mott the Hoople / Brain Capers fashion than the Bad Co tradition. Ian Hunter could've made this his own, but Howe presses all the right buttons. That was the original Side 1, and the feeling was that this was an energetic and memorable record. Side 2 starts with the brilliant Long Walk, similar to That Girl in its bluesy feel, but even better. It has that 'classic' feel, and the lyrics are quite moving, accentuating the lovely guitar solos. Hold on My Heart is more American-sunding, and possibly a little Springsteen-ish. Valerie was another 45 in the making - catchy, funny, but quite hard-rocking. Then there's the exquisite ballad, When We Made Love, Simon Kirke back at his balladeering best! There's a delicious irony in that one of The Carpenters' songwriters (Richard Bettis?) helped him write it. That's ironic because The Carpenters were NOT enamoured of Mick Ralphs' old band. At all! Anyway, this song is a genuine tear-jerker, a very (very!) grown-up number. And the band rock out with If I'm Sleeping, which proved a live highlight. Bad Co '86/'87 went out as support to Deep Purple soon after the album's release, and tapes from the tour suggest that there was a lot of life in the band. (Boz Burrell quit during the tour, but one Steve Price stepped in capably.) So, if you like melodic rock/pop, with some good and heavy powerchording (and a little blues), you'll enjoy this uptempo, cheerful album!
